6th Grade Science Syllabus and Procedures

Course Description:
Science Grade 6 is a course, which will focus on Scientific Investigation, Reasoning, and Logic;
Force, Motion, and Energy; Matter; Life Processes; Living Systems; Interrelationships in
Earth/Space Systems; Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change; and Earth Resources. This course will
show relevance to student learning and understanding of science.
* Much of the course will be taught through teacher made notes, presentations and videos that
will be uploaded to the classroom website: www.Sci6WBMS.weebly.com. Textbooks are rarely
used. If you would like to check out a book as an extra resource for your child, you may do so,
but it will be checked out in the students name and will be their responsibility.
General Rules for Ms. McKinneys Class:
Be on time, prepared, respectful and responsible.
Raise your hand and wait until called upon to talk.
Remain in your seat unless you have permission to get up.
Be polite and respectful. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
Be prepared (bring necessary supplies, books, and assignments to class).
Pay attention (look and listen to the person who is talking).
Follow directions of all adults.
Leave all non-educational items at home.
Preparation for Class:
Students are required to bring a pencil, paper, completed homework and their interactive
notebook to each class unless otherwise directed.
Expectations for class:
Everyone has the right to, and should expect to, learn.
Each individual is worthy of respect.
Classroom orderliness is necessary for an effective classroom.
Hard work is necessary for learning.
Earned consequences:
The teacher may: require a detention before or after school or during the first five minutes of the
lunch period, a call to the parent, a team conference with the student, or hold a parent
conference with the team of teachers. The Districts Student Handbook outlines the official
progressive discipline policy which may be activated based on the students behavior and the
judgment of an administrator.

Make-Up Work, including Missed and Late Work:


Students shall be permitted to make up work because of excused or unexcused absences,
including in-school or out-of-school suspensions, in accordance with the following guidelines:
The student is responsible for requesting and completing all work missed in a timely manner,
the student will have the amount of days to make up the work as they do absences.
Work not made- up will receive a zero.
Work missed that cannot be made-up at home (e.g., laboratory experiments, laboratory
experience, direct instruction) shall be made-up through an alternative assessment or during
time provided before and after school or during lunch.
In the case of intentional absences (e.g., skipping an individual class or an entire school day),
students shall not be permitted to make-up work for credit and shall receive a zero for any
graded work assigned on the day of the absence.
Grading:
Grades shall be based on student achievement and the timely completion of work.

A 93-100 4.0
A- 90-92 3.7

B+ 87-89 3.3
B 83-86 3.0
B- 80-82 2.7

C+ 77-79 2.3
C 73-76 2.0
C- 70-72 1.7

D 64-66 1.0
D+ 67-69 1.3
E Below 64 0.0

Tardies:
You are expected to be in the classroom following the class preparation instructions
listed on the board when the bell rings, or you will be considered tardy. On days
when it is necessary for students to be absent from school, parents are required to
notify the school and provide documentation as to why the student was not present.
Parent Teacher Conferences:
Teachers will contact parents/guardians to share good news concerning their
students educational growth or to discuss behaviors or work habits that might
cause the student difficulty in class. Students are to meet, outside of class time with
the teacher to discuss questions or concerns related to class. If this contact does
not resolve the issue, students may contact the assistant principal. Parents are
encouraged to communicate with teachers through e-mail.
