How To Setup Data Virtualization Tooling for CodeReady Studio 12

codeready studio
The release of the latest Red Hat developer suite version 12 brings with it a name change from Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio to Red Hat CodeReady Studio.

The focus here is not on the Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces, a cloud and container development experience, but on the locally installed developers studio.

The new release brings with it the questions around how to get started with the various Red Hat integration, data, and process automation product tool sets that are not installed out of the box.

This series of articles continues to showcase how to install each set of tools and explains the products they are supporting. The hope is that an easy getting started experience helps you make informed decisions about the tooling you might want to use on your next development project.

There are three different software packs that offer tooling for various Red Hat middleware technologies:
  1. Red Hat Integration Development
  2. Red Hat Process Automation Development
  3. Red Hat Data Virtualization Development
This article will outline how to get started with the Red Hat Data Virtualization tooling with any of the CodeReady Studio version 12 releases.

AppDev in the Cloud - Data Virtualization Solves Acquisition Use Case

appdev cloud data virtualization
In a past role I helped put together a rather expansive travel agency booking project to show some of the more interesting feature of JBoss BPM Suite.

The project continued to expand over time, adding on not just a bookings process, but also a payment process that included advanced features like compensation (rolling back bookings), integration of traditional web services in service tasks and a credit card fraud detection system.

An interesting use case came to light that required the use of a data virtualization tool and this travel booking example project was a perfect fit. It's a use case where a sister travel agency is acquired mid-booking season and we don't want to have to re-deploy new applications to account for maintaining data in two disparate location.

Before we get into the solution, let's look closer at the use case shall we?

How To Setup Data Virtualization Tooling For JBoss Developer Studio 10

The release of the latest JBoss Developer Studio (JBDS) brings with it the questions around how to get started with the various JBoss Integration and BPM product tool sets that are not installed out of the box.

In this series of articles we will outline for you how to install each set of tools and explain which products they are supporting.

This should help you in making an informed decision about what tooling you might want to install before embarking on your next JBoss integration project.

There are four different software packs that offer tooling for various JBoss integration products:
  1. JBoss Data Virtualization Development
  2. JBoss Business Process and Rules Development
  3. JBoss Fuse Development
  4. JBoss Integration and SOA Development
Tooling is available under software updates
with early access enabled.
This article will outline how to get started with the JBoss Data Virtualization development tooling and any of the JBDS 10 series of releases.

Installation

JBDS 10 can be obtained through the Customer Portal or via the early access downloads on jboss.org. After installing JBDS, start it up and you will see a welcoming JBoss Central tab with at the bottom a tab to look at the available tool sets labeled Software/Update

You will notice at the time of this writing that there are no other JBoss Integration stacks offered to install upon first inspection. This is due to the other integration stacks being early access.

Select JBoss Data Virtualization development.
Eventually they will be shown by default once testing finished and they release, but for now you can obtain them by checking the Early Access box in the bottom right corner.

This will reveal the integration stack tooling offerings and we will select JBoss Data Virtualization Development.

Click on the Install/Update button to start the installation and restart at the end to complete the process.

If you are interested in what is being installed, it can be examined by examining the pop-up listing of components and versions. Note this will change as the early access progresses towards final releases.

OSCON 2016 submission - Riding the seas of change with an online retail travel agency

I have submitted a talk to OSCON 2016 in Austin, Texas next year on May 18-19th.

The trigger was a rather interesting category around real life solutions and how Open Source can be applied.

        They described it as:

"Hearing about how a company or team has succeeded with a new initiative, implemented a new language, or reconfigured their architecture is fascinating—so is listening in on the failures. Both success and failure have a lot to teach us. As individuals we have a limit to how many of those we can complete in one year so this track is about sharing war stories and life on the front lines. Help the person beside you and tell your story. All proposals here should be in the form of real-life stories. How did you go from a monolith to microservices? Now that you’ve migrated to microservices, how do you manage them in production? How did they hack your system?"

With this in mind, I have put together a story around the JBoss BPM Travel Agency to highlight OpenSource solutions when migrating to microservices and then later when an acquisitions requires the need for data virtualization solutions to prevent bookings losses mid-season.

The talk outline is listed below.

        Summary

The attendee will journey with a small retail travel agency that weathers the storms of doing business in a fast moving, modern IT landscape. The adventures start with a microservice migration, continues with a mid-season acquisition of a sister agency requiring an agile data virtualization solution to prevent revenue loss. Hold on tight as you ride stormy seas of a retail travel agency business.

        Abstract

This session will take the attendee on a journey as a small retail travel agency weathers the storms of doing business in a fast moving IT landscape. The attendee will be taken from initial implementation of a services based architecture for a travel booking solution, through a microservices migration, to finally dealing with an acquisition of a sister agency during the high point of the booking season that requires virtual data integration solutions.

        Attendees will be:

        • given insights into a retail travel booking solution based on Open Source software.
        • shown how rules and events can be leveraged for fraud detection on payment methods.
        • provided with complete access to project solution that migrates existing services to microservices.
        • taken on the journey of acquiring a sister agency during the high point of the travel booking season.
        • shown how both agency's data sources were integrated without disrupting booking processes or revenue generation.
        • left with example projects showing how solutions were implemented for further review after session.
        • pointed to workshop materials where they can get hands on with the solutions presented.

Be ready to hold on tight as you ride the stormy seas of a retail travel agency's business as it grows and adapts to their ever changing retail markets using Open Source software solutions.

        Sound like something worth attending?
