Incontro DevOps Italia 2024 - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Data (slides + recording)

As previously posted, I made it a priority to attend Incontro DevOps Italia 2024 in Bologna, Italy.  I felt it was important to come back this year and share my thoughts on cloud native data and some of the challenges that organizations are facing.

The event was in Bologna, the lively, historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy. Its Piazza Maggiore is a sprawling plaza lined with arched colonnades, cafes and medieval and Renaissance structures such as City Hall, the Fountain of Neptune and the Basilica di San Petronio. Among the city’s many medieval towers are the Two Towers, leaning Asinelli and Garisenda.

I really enjoyed exploring the culinary offerings that Bologna offered and hope to be invited back again next time!

Below you will find the outline of my talk along with the slides and a recording as promised.

Incontro DevOps Italia 2024 - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Data

Last year I submitted and was accepted to speak at the Incontro DevOps Italia event, but due to changing circumstances related to work I had to pull out. This is not something I have rarely done and I always make it a point to clear my schedule for the following year to attend.

This year's priority was for Incontro DevOps Italia 2024 on the 15th of March in Bologna, Italy.  I'm grateful they selected my talk this year and for being part of a select group of speakers.

I'm personally looking forward to a bit of exploring the culinary offerings that Bologna has to offer!

Cloud Native London Meetup - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Native Observability (slides + recording)

Yesterday I was back to the Cloud Native London meetup, having been given the opportunity to present due to a speaker canceling at the last minute.

They have +7,000 members and it is, "...the official Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Meetup group dedicated to building a strong, open, diverse developer community around the Cloud Native platform and technologies in London." You can also find them on their own slack channel, so feel free to drop in for a quick chat if you like.

There were over 85 attendees that braved the cold London evening to join us for pizza, drinks, and a bit of fun with my session having a special design this time around. I went out on a limb and tried something I've never seen before, a sort of choose-your-own-adventure presentation. Below I've included a description of how I think it went, the feedback I got, and where you can find both the slides and recording online if you missed it.

Cloud Native London Meetup - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Native Observability

I'm heading back to the Cloud Native London meetup this week, having been given the opportunity to present due to a speaker canceling at the last minute.

I am always happy to help out and the hop to London from the Netherlands is a short and easy trip.

That session I presented last time in January of 2023 was about the pitfalls everyone should avoid with cloud data and they live streamed it with a recording available online if you want to revisit.

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, 10 January in London I'll be sharing some brand new content on the pitfalls of cloud native observability.

Infobip Shift Conference 2023 - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Data

Back in 2018 I was exposed for the first time to an amazing conference then known as Shift Developer Conference. It was an amazing location in Split, Croatia and one of the founders, Ivan Burazin quickly became a good friend.

I spoke on the main stage which was hosted in the Croatian National Opera House, something that remains both a special experience and was recorded.

I've stayed in contact with Ivan over the years and wanted to return, but pandemics and other events kept me away, until this year. I bumped into Ivan at last year's KubeCon NA in Detroit, MA and while catching up on his activities he encouraged me to submit some talks right away.

So I did.

This year's Shift Conference is from 18-19 Sep and word on the street is that they are looking at around 5000 attendees. Below you will find the outline of my talk.

Google Lightning Talk - Optimizing Observability Spend: Metrics

Today on day 1 of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon I was asked to speak in a lighting talk slot at the Google booth.

The topic was, of course one that is on the lips of everyone here at the event, how can I save on costs?

I thought it would be interesting to share my observations on how you can optimize your observability spend in this rather chaotic cloud native world.

Below you'll find the slides I presented, and a short abstract of the talk.

Kubernetes Community Day France 2023 - Observability for Complexity at Cloud Native Scale

This Spring, the Cloud Native Community Groups has organized a few Kubernetes Community Days (KCD) across Europe. I've always been curious about these events, wondering if they might allow me to share my cloud native observability insights and meet with fellow practitioners in this space.

On 7 March 2023 the KCD France 2023 will take place in Paris, France and their call for papers went out in September. Together with a French speaking friend of mine, we're submitting a few talks to see if they will allow us to entertain the KCD France attendees.

The submission deadline closed this week, so I wanted to share my submissions while we wait on the responses from the selection committee.

O11y Guide - Keeping Your Cloud Native Observability Options Open

This is the fourth article in the series covering my journey into the world of cloud native observability. If you missed any of the previous articles, head on back to the introduction for a quick update.

After laying out the groundwork for this series in the initial article, I spent some time in the second article sharing who the observability players are. I also discussed the teams that these players are on in this world of cloud native o11y. For the third article I looked at the ongoing discussion around monitoring pillars versus phases.

Being a developer from my early days in IT, it's been very interesting to explore the complexities of cloud native o11y. Monitoring applications goes way beyond just writing and deploying code, especially in the cloud native world. One thing remains the same, maintaining your organization's architecture always requires both a vigilant outlook and an understanding of available open standards.

In this forth article I'm going to look at architecture level choices being made and share the open standards with the open source landscape.

OpenShift Commons Dublin - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Data (video)

As previously mentioned, on 23 June 2022 I spoke at the OpenShift Commons event in Dublin.

It was open to all community participants: users, operators, enterprises, non-profits, educational institutions, partners, and service providers as well as other open source technology initiatives utilized under the hood or to extend the OpenShift platform.

I shared some insights into cloud, public cloud, and the way cloud data is having a huge impact on our organizations. I pointed out three aspects to show how sometimes we are missing a very crucial aspect of our usage (and the cost) of data in the cloud. It's not just about storage, but observability and some of the choices we make when collecting metrics on our cloud applications.

Below you'll find the session recording along with the abstract and slides I used in Dublin.

OpenShift Commons Dublin - 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Cloud Data

I've been invited to share my insights into cloud data at the upcoming OpenShift Commons event in Dublin, Ireland.

On Thursday, 23 June 2022 I'll be on stage with other community members and customers sharing their stories as they work with OpenShift and other cloud technologies. OpenShift Commons is open to all community participants: users, operators, enterprises, non-profits, educational institutions, partners, and service providers as well as other open source technology initiatives utilized under the hood or to extend the OpenShift platform.

It's a great place to find your community:

  • If you are an OpenShift Online or an OpenShift Enterprise customer or have deployed OpenShift on-premise or on a public cloud.
  • If you have contributed to the OpenShift Origin project and want to connect with your peers and end-users.
  • If you simply want to stay up-to-date on the roadmap and best practices for using, deploying, and operating OpenShift.

Now about that talk I'm going to share with you...

Red Hat Summit 2022 - Talking Architecture Shop Series

 red hat summit 2022

It's that time of year again when we get the Red Hat Summit 2022 call for papers!

I heard the call and thought this year would be a perfect time to go all in with sessions around our architectures based on a series of talks we've designed to showcase the various aspects we cover. Some are vertical aligned and others are just customer domains, but all of them include extensive research into how to implement successful architectures at scale.

Last week the call for papers closed and the internal committees are starting to churn through all of the excellent content they've been given. Sometime in March 2022 we should hear back from them.

How about a look at the various sessions we've put together where I'll be presenting with my good friends in the architecture team?

Beginners Guide to Installing Process Automation Tooling in a Local Container using Podman

Recently the open source community project called Podman announced that there was solid support for using its container tooling to replace docker on your local development machine. Ring in the joyous music and off we go to explore how we can get back to basics without the issues of licensing around the developer desktop container tooling.

Note, the rest of this tutorial will be based on the current version of Podman at the time of publication, v3.3.1.

The first thing you want to do is just install the Podman tooling, which is fairly painless using BREW:

$ brew install podman

Now you are ready to kick off the virtual machine with the proper settings to start doing something real, like adding developer process automation tooling to your local machine.
