2019 in review - Open career and portfolio architecture

As 2019 winds down to its end, I find it a good time to slow down and reflect on what as transpired.

We've shared time together in articles, on flights, on stages, at the coffee machine, on video channels, and in many a Red Hat office around the globe. 

I've spent the year with a fun team where we've been creating architectural blueprints based on customer solutions leveraging the open technology portfolio at Red Hat. Watch for more of this from me in 2020 as we push on ahead.

I passed the ten year mark at Red Hat and we're living in interesting times. With that in mind, here's my review activities from 2019.

Red Hat Summit 2020 - An Advanced Agile Integration Blueprint

Back in early November I shared a pile of submissions to Red Hat Summit 2020 in San Francisco on Apr 27-29.

Since that time I've again, for the 4th year in a row, been leading the team that select and delivers your hands-on labs experience at Red Hat Summit.

As of last week we've finalized the hands-on labs and started sending acceptance emails (rejects follow later), along with the first round of acceptances for other sessions. Anyone who looks closely at my submissions to Red Hat Summit each year should notice I'm no longer putting any hands-on labs in the call for papers. Being on the selection team I've felt that's not right to participate in that type of session, so I've focused on other session types.

With this round of notifications, I've gotten one session accepted. Let's see what you can join me for in San Francisco, shall we?

Voxxed Days Milan 2020 - Open Career, Microservice Questions, and DevOps Heroes

The usual process is to wait for the conference call for papers (Voxxed Days Milan) to close before publishing the sessions and workshops submitted, but this time it's going to be promotion of the event above the talks submitted!

Voxxed Days Milan 2020 shall be hosted on a single day, May 16th 2020 in Milan, Italy. The organizers reached out for some help publicizing their event and getting you, the great speakers in our developer communities, motivated to submit your ideas for Voxxed Days Milan call for papers.

It's worth noting, any talks you end up giving are going to be recorded. After the conference all videos of the talks will eventually be published online. You can enjoy previous’ year edition of Voxxed Days Milan 2019 recordings here. Even those not at Voxxed Days Milan can watch them, but the real fun was being there.

I'll admit, I got a bit excited as the event looks to be great fun and in a wonderful city full of history and vibrant life. I might have gone a bit overboard but submitted no less than three ideas; one is a workshop overview, one is an insightful look at integration challenges, and the final one is a keynote on how open can be the key to your career.

Digital Architecture Design Day 2019 - Open is Key to Your Career (slides)

Previous mentioned that today a unique conference for IT architects took place at  Congress center 1931. The Digital Architecture Design Day 2019 (DADD) asked for a keynote opening that would be motivational.

With a conference full of architects you can expect the keynotes to have titles focused on customer centrist design, digital transformation, and other technically focused topics. Nothing wrong with that, but I thought it might be fun to share a story with you about how being more open might just be the secret sauce for your career as an architect.

How to setup OpenShift Container Platform on your local machine in minutes

It's been awhile since I've talked about running OpenShift Container Platform on your local machine.

This mean a container platform at your finger tips, one you can experience the joys of cloud native development and automated rolling deployments. Since I started pulling together ways to easily experience this with OpenShift Container Platform, back with version 3.3 believe it or not, we've come a long ways.

For some time now I've been waiting for the local installation that stopped being supported with OpenShift Container Platform 3.9 to reappear in version 4.x. Well now it's finally here with the last release of OpenShift Container Platform 4.2, in the form of Code Ready Containers.

The idea was to make this as streamlined of an experience as possible by using the same Code Ready Containers Easy Install project. Let's take a look at what this looks like.

Red Hat Summit 2020 submissions

It's that time of year again, where we all start putting our heads together and submitting our biggest ideas to the Red Hat Summit 2020 in San Francisco on Apr 27-29.

The last few years I've been lucky enough to head up the hands-on labs, meaning working with the selection team, the planning team, the labs development teams, the presenters, and finally the support teams on site. It's grown every year an last year was no less than 57 labs run for our attendees, with 6 of the top 10 voted sessions being hands-on labs. The top 3 of 4 for entire event where also hands-on labs sessions, so we're proud of our labs presenters!

As you can imagine, that is a lot of work that has caused my participation in other areas (like presenting sessions myself) to decrease noticeably across that time span. This year I've been able to scale back my participation in hands-on labs to just the selection planning, with another team assuming the development and delivery management phases.

Let's look at what this means for my participation in sharing open technology and ideas this year?

Red Hat Forum Poland - Keynote and 3 Ptifall Sessions (slides)

This week in Warsaw, Poland we entertained around a thousand attendees at the National Stadium for the Red Hat Forum Poland 2019.

For the keynote we had around 700 attendees in the main stage area and they were even lined up along the back and sides of the room. The turnout was exceptional.

Along with keynoting, we interacted with attendees on sessions covering the pitfalls of microservice and hybrid multicloud transitions for organizations.

Codemotion Rome 2020 submissions

It's that time of year again, where one of the best Codemotion conferences that is held in Rome on March 27-28, 2020.

I've been invited to speak there several times over the years but it's been awhile so it's time to try again with the topics and material that's been developed over the last year. There's workshop material focused on creating DevOps heroes, microservice tips, and a bit of career help with how open source  is the key.

Getting Started with Cloud Native Development on OpenShift Container Platform (video)

After hosting a webinar to kick start developers looking to get hands on with an easy to use Cloud Native developer tool chain, I wanted to share a step-by-step video with you.

The video walks through the use of Red Hat Developers hosted tooling for Red Hat OpenShift Application Runtimes (RHOAR) used to automate the setup of a full cloud native development tool chain.

First you'll use the Launcher to coordinate your setup, then choose a Spring Boot example application, create a git-based project with web hooks to push changes to an OpenShift Container Platform for automated build, test, and deployment using containers.

How to Jump Start Your Career in Open Source (video)

Back in August I spent a week at DevConf.US and got to share a really special story that comes from personal experience while being involved in open source throughout my career.

It's one I've used to open events, as a keynote in various adjusted forms, and as a session like this one. One thing remains the same throughout each telling, it's about sharing how to jump start your career in open source.
It's a very special talk, one that reached out to each and every one of us regardless of your age, the number of years in your job, and most of all, no matter what you are doing right now you'll learn something new. Not many talks promise you that, do they?

3 Pitfalls Everyone Ignores with Microservices (video)

Back in August I spent a week at DevConf.US talking about microservices, specifically about the 3 pitfalls everyone ignores with microservices.

This week I'm hosting a webinar to kick start developers looking to get hands on with an easy to use Cloud Native developer tool chain. It's part of an introduction series of webinars (more here) to help participants get started with their hackaton competition using open source technologies.

DevOpsDays Raleigh 2019 - Creating Real DevOps Heroes (workshop)

Today was the launch of  this new workshop, focused on creating real DevOps heros by sharing a brand new (for most) tool for their toolboxes at DevOps Days Raleigh.

Whether you're a developer or and operations minded person, it's always nice to have a powerful selection of tooling to choose from when tackling the various problems in your daily work.

When this session was accepted I was pretty excited as it gave me the chance to share something entirely new with process automation and DevOps at it's core. While thinking about how to leverage automation integration across organizations for more than just CI/CD and infrastructure automation, this workshop was born.

Red Hat Forum Poland - Keynote and a Journey Through 3 Pitfalls

Every year in the fall Red Hat organizes events known as Red Hat Forums. These are smaller versions of the experience you can have at Red Hat Summit, without having to travel to either Boston or San Francisco (they switch coasts every year). To make it even easier they are organized all over the various regions of the world, from North America, Europe, and Asia.

On occasion I'm asked to help out by presenting a keynote and sessions during one of the European Red Hat Forums. This year Ive been invited to speak at the Red Hat Forum Poland, presenting three sessions of which one is the opening technical keynote.

When discussing the development impact on existing applications while transitioning to microservices, there are five questions that keep popping up in one form or another. They are the same regardless of the size of the organization and seem to become part of strategy discussions later in the process as organizations move towards microservice architectures.

These articles cover questions that everyone should ask about microservices. Their based on experiences from interactions with organizations in the process of conquering microservices for existing development and for delivering modern applications.

Previously we covered four questions; the performance impact of microservices,  a question on state and monoliths, one about data and microservices, and on testing microservices.  In this fifth and final article we look at the confusion around using API management or service mesh.

Digital Architecture Design Day 2019 Keynote

On Thursday, November 14 in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands a unique conference for IT architects will be hosted at the Congress center 1931. It's called the Digital Architecture Design Day 2019 (DADD) and they've been so kind as to invite me for a keynote slot.

What's the DADD you ask? Well, in their own words, "It's a community driven event that will reveal the best ways of putting strategy into practice for information intensive, medium to large sized ecosystems that deal with a complex environment. Our goal is achieving sustainable change and coherent solutions by exchanging visions from global thought leaders, best practices, learnings and ideas. DevOps Days Raleigh 2019: DevOps Heroes Workshop Accepted

Back in 2018 we put together the first version of the talk about 3 pitfalls everyone should avoid with hybrid multicloud.

This talk was recorded and such a popular talk that it was top rated at Red Hat Summit 2018. It also garnered attention with a few of our customers which resulted in a tour through the middle of the US to present on-site.

After all this, we published a four part series of articles that outlines our thoughts. Later that year we were approached to help with a book you can now download for free, Multicloud Portability for Dummies, which is strongly based on the articles.

So let's look at the upcoming sequel.

Beginners Guide - Building an Online Retail Web Shop Workshop

With the release of Red Hat Decision Manager 7.3 I've started updating my free online workshop, a beginners guide to building an online retail web shop.

This update is the first two labs in this workshop, with more to follow, that installs Red Hat Decision Manager on your laptop. After the installation you'll start by creating a new project for the online retail web shop you'll be building in subsequent labs.

Red Hat Tech Day 2019 - Open is Key to Your Career (slides)

Yesterday we kicked off the Red Hat Tech Day 2019 in Netherlands with a motivational keynote where I was asked to share stories on how the philosophy of 'open' is key to your career.

Over 200 attendees showed up and were both interactive and engaged about how they could look at themselves, share more of what they know, and as a side effect positively affect their careers.

With well over 50% of the audience indicating 15 years or more in the IT workforce, the topic was very relevant. Too many of us are engaged in work tasks and forget to share the vast wealth of knowledge we've acquired over these years.

DevConf.US 2019 - Open Source Career with Automation Integration Acceptances

Previously I talked about submitting to DevConf.us in Boston.

After submitting I was asked to help chair the Application Development and Containers track, so told the organizers we would not be selecting any of my talks for our track.

I kind of assumed I would just be attending as a track chair to assist the speakers in presenting smoothly through the entire conference. Then last week the acceptance letters arrived and all three talks have been chosen.

Gonna be busy time but fun week in Boston, MA from Aug 17 - 19, so hope to see you at one of these talks or just for a chat in the halls.

Red Hat Tech Day 2019 - Open is Key to Your Career

Beginners Guide: Multicloud Portability for Dummies

This last year was a good year for talking about cloud, hybrid cloud, and hybrid multicloud.

We saw many organziations struggling with some of the same issues time and again. Their frustrations being voiced were enough that together with Roel Hodzelmans we pulled together an introductory session for Red Hat Summit 2018 entitled, 3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Hybrid Multicloud.

Based on reactions to this talk we decided to expand the reach with a series of four articles covering all aspects of the material.  The series was picked up through on DZone.com, generating so much interest that there's clearly a need for these multicloud insights.

Together with the 'for dummies' series, we came up with an outline based on our content, feedback from attendees, and the published articles. This become a free e-book you can download, so let's look at the outline.

How To Setup Data Virtualization Tooling for CodeReady Studio 12

The release of the latest Red Hat developer suite version 12 brings with it a name change from Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio to Red Hat CodeReady Studio.

The focus here is not on the Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces, a cloud and container development experience, but on the locally installed developers studio.

The new release brings with it the questions around how to get started with the various Red Hat integration, data, and process automation product tool sets that are not installed out of the box.

This series of articles continues to showcase how to install each set of tools and explains the products they are supporting. The hope is that an easy getting started experience helps you make informed decisions about the tooling you might want to use on your next development project.

There are three different software packs that offer tooling for various Red Hat middleware technologies:

1. Red Hat Integration Development
2. Red Hat Process Automation Development
3. Red Hat Data Virtualization Development

This article will outline how to get started with the Red Hat Data Virtualization tooling with any of the CodeReady Studio version 12 releases.

The release of the latest Red Hat developer suite version 12 brings with it a name change from Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio to Red Hat CodeReady Studio.
