🍁 Happy Thanksgiving from the IFT Sustainable Food Systems Division! 🍁 As we gather with loved ones to celebrate this season of gratitude, let’s remember that Thanksgiving is also a time to reflect on our relationship with food. Did you know that holiday meals often lead to an increase in food waste, with millions of pounds of uneaten food ending up in landfills? This year, let’s take small but meaningful steps to minimize food waste at our Thanksgiving dinners. Here are some simple tips to make your celebration more sustainable: 🥧 Plan Ahead: Know how many guests you’re expecting and plan portions accordingly. Use a portion calculator to avoid over-preparing food. 🍂 Get Creative with Leftovers: Have a plan for your leftovers! Turn turkey into soups, casseroles, or sandwiches, and use leftover veggies in omelets or stir-fries. 🥔 Share the Feast: Encourage guests to take home leftovers. Send them with reusable containers to enjoy the meal again later. use recyclable plates and glasses. 🍎 Compost Scraps: If you can’t eat it, compost it! Fruit peels, veggie scraps, and other organic waste can nourish your garden instead of sitting in a landfill. 🥗 Donate Excess Food: If you’ve prepared too much, check with local food banks or shelters to see if they accept donations of unopened and safe-to-eat items. By making conscious choices, we can all contribute to reducing food waste and fostering a more sustainable future. Let’s ensure that our gratitude for food extends to how we value and use it! 🌎 You can visit this link by Tufts University The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University for some exciting and creative recipes: https://lnkd.in/gY77u-AC What are your tips for managing food waste during the holidays? 🌍 Happy World Food Day 2024! 🌍 Today, we celebrate the power of food—more than just sustenance, it represents diversity, nutrition, affordability, and safety for all. This year’s theme focuses on creating a food system where greater diversity of nutritious foods is available in our fields, in our markets, and on our tables—benefiting everyone, everywhere. Foods should not only nourish us but also reflect the cultural diversity of our global community. As we work toward improving food systems, let’s ensure that these essential values are at the core: 🥦 Diversity: From the seeds we plant to the dishes we serve, greater biodiversity in agriculture means more resilience, sustainability, and healthier ecosystems. A wider range of crops ensures we are feeding both people and the planet. 🍎 Nutrition: Nutritious food should be a right, not a privilege. As we work toward ending hunger, we must also focus on providing foods that support health and well-being, ensuring access to essential vitamins and minerals. 💰 Affordability: Healthy, diverse, and safe foods should be accessible to everyone—not just the few. Efforts to make nutritious food more affordable will help tackle food insecurity and promote equity in our communities. 🔒 Safety: Ensuring the safety of our food supply is critical for public health. It’s not enough to have access to food—our food must be free from harmful contaminants and produced in ways that protect consumers and workers alike. Let’s use World Food Day 2024 as a reminder to continue the fight for a future where no one is left behind—where food systems prioritize people and planet, and where everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and diverse foods. 🌱 What can you do? 1- Support local, diverse, and sustainable farming practices. 2-Advocate for policies that make nutritious food affordable for all. 4-Educate yourself and others on the importance of food safety. Together, we can transform the way the world produces, consumes, and values food for the benefit of people, the planet, and prosperity. #WorldFoodDay #FoodForAll #DiversityInFood #NutritionForEveryone #AffordableHealthyFood #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSafety #ZeroHunger #SustainableFoodSystems Video: https://lnkd.in/gAx5CBxR
