This project explored innovative packaging solutions that meet safety standards and support sustainability in the food industry. Through research and collaboration, I learned how to improve product safety, extend shelf life, and reduce waste with eco-friendly packaging. Striving for a Sustainable Food System 🌍 I’m a huge supporter of the ‘Farm to Fork Strategy’ at the heart of the European Green Deal, which aims to make food systems globally fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly. 🌱 The food industry, with its close ties to the natural world and significant greenhouse gas contributions, has a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Poor practices across the supply chain not only harm the environment but also jeopardise future yields. The EU’s Farm to Fork strategy offers a fantastic blueprint for everyone involved in food production and sales. 🛒🌾 Redesigning our food system to use fewer natural resources is undeniably positive. A more regenerative approach that avoids biodiversity loss brings clear commercial benefits to an industry deeply connected to nature. 🌿 Thankfully, there’s great progress in food supply chains. UK grocers like Waitrose, Ocado, Morrisons, Co-op, and Tesco have committed to helping farmers adopt more sustainable practices. 🌍🌟 Ocado Retail, for instance, has designated five supplier farms as demo sites for nature and climate-friendly farming, hosting training sessions to share expertise and inspire others. 🚜 In partnership with the Soil Association, Ocado’s ‘Farm to Fork Ambassadors programme’ encourages those providing healthy and sustainable food to share their stories and experiences across the industry. This kind of initiative is exactly what we need. 👏 As the COO of food waste prevention tech company Gander, I’m eager to see more contributions from the tech community in supporting this agenda. Last year at the Food Changemakers Summit from #Ftalks, I emphasised the importance of collaboration throughout the supply chain to create new products, shopping experiences, and diverse information for consumers as part of the future food movement. The same goes for our sector’s sustainability drive.
