Olympic rankings vary depending on where you look at them. Some use gold medals to rank, then silver for draws, then bronze; some use a bold sum of any medal types ('Sum' column below). I like to give a weight to each medal type, with a bigger one on gold, as harder to obtain (requiring more efforts, or more won games to achieve). Following this week trend: #Paris2024 #Olympics What an interesting explanation from The Economist about the performance of countries in terms of medals won at the #Olympics in relation to their #GDP. This analysis provides insights into the resources and investments different countries allocate towards sports. Usually, countries with higher GDPs tend to win more medals due to better funding for training, facilities, and athletes development. The Irish Times may want to consider what the chart on Ireland's position in the Olympic Medals Table is actually communicating. https://lnkd.in/eHsQ4qVT While caveated with "Lower numbers are better" most people will probably not read this and go straight for the pretty picture where the chart appears to show a poor performance from the Irish team at Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 and other recent Olympics. In this case a lower number is a positive as it relates to their medal table rank where Ireland have performed much better than in previous Olympics. Therefore surely flipping to the chart so the lower numbers are at the top would be a much better visualisation and indicate the positive performance the team had compared to previous Olympics.
