I have already signed WISTA International’s pledge for inclusion of women in the shipping industry. Have you? Among seafarer there is approximately only 4-5% women. The figure is higher in the shore based organisations however not on top management level. As industry we are competing for talents and competence with all others industries and companies with much higher brand recognition. If we as an industry shall be successful in the transform that lays ahead of us we cannot afford to exclude 50% of the workforce. It is proven that companies with more diversity have happier employees, greater customer satisfaction, and generates more profit. #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInMaritime Today, as we commemorate International Women's Day, I reflect on my journey in the maritime industry not solely as a woman, but as an individual who has advanced through dedication, competence, discipline, and purpose. On this occasion, I extend an open message to my fellow female professionals in the maritime sector, as well as to all those involved in the global shipping and maritime industries. As a woman navigating a predominantly male domain, it is imperative to dispel the misconception that women are inherently weaker. Let me assert that being a woman does not connote fragility or impede your capacity to fulfill responsibilities. The crux lies in recognizing your boundaries. Knowing when to pause to prevent errors and understanding when to adapt are vital competencies applicable to all individuals, irrespective of gender. Your limitations are not defined by your gender but by physical strength. If a task requires physical prowess beyond your current capability, do not be disheartened; instead, focus on acquiring knowledge and striving for growth. Your intellectual prowess compensates for any physical limitations. Your cognitive capacity can supersede physical constraints, enabling you to excel in diverse roles if given the opportunity. Continuous learning is paramount. A woman of astuteness and resourcefulness can thrive in any position when provided with the chance. Remember, you are more than qualified. Refuse to be perceived merely as a placeholder within the crew. Equip yourself with requisite skills and expertise, and witness your potential for ascension. Whether aspiring to be a captain or chief engineer, dare to dream big and diligently pursue your objectives. Today, I implore CEOs and corporate leaders to advocate for women's inclusion in maritime roles beyond mere tokenism. Let this commitment extend beyond #LinkedIn discussions post this day. Offer a woman an opportunity today and witness her transformative impact. Recognize that a woman embodies more than physical attributes; beneath the exterior lies profound knowledge and expertise in her chosen field. "Invest in women today and catalyze their advancement." On this significant day, I express gratitude to the company that embraced me regardless of my experience level, showcasing a commendable commitment to inclusivity. Thank you for elevating the standard of inclusion. Observed globally on 18 May every year, Women in Maritime Day seeks to raise the profile of women in maritime, while promoting their recruitment, retention and sustained employment in the sector. Currently, only 29% of the overall maritime workforce and 20% of the workforce of national maritime authorities are women. Women make up less than 2% of seafarers worldwide. Speaking at an international event to mark the occasion on Friday, 17 May 2024, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr Arsenio Dominguez stated: “We must – and will – do more. By investing in women's education and professional development, we empower women, drive innovation and foster sustainability within the maritime industry, to the benefit of all.” The rise of digitalization and automation as well as green technology in the sector will require new skills and potentially signal new career opportunities for women. “Change is both necessary and coming… With increase in trade and the transition towards a greener and more sustainable sector, the opportunities to enhance diversity and inclusion are in front of us. I want you all to look at how you can drive understanding, awareness and change within your own organizations,” said Mr Dominguez. He recognized the work carried out under IMO’s long-standing Women in Maritime programme, which takes a three-pronged approach of ‘training-visibility-recognition’ for women. #WomenInMaritimeDay https://lnkd.in/eYD7cky5

💐International Women’s Day💐 Today Nautilus International will be celebrating women in the historically male-dominated maritime industry, and advocating for greater gender diversity. IMO statistics revealed that only 2% of seafarers are female. The Union pushes to eliminate barriers that may hinder women from entering maritime careers, and empower them to follow their maritime calling despite gender disparities. With all the transformations in the shipping industry, climate change, decarbonisation and AI, the maritime sector needs to be supportive and inclusive to all genders to keep the industry thriving and growing. #IWD2024 #InspireInclusion #ThisIsOurWorldToo WISTA UK International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF)
