The Maritime Professionals trade union and professional organisation

About us

Nautilus International is a trade union and professional organisation representing more than 22,000 maritime professionals in the UK, Netherlands and Switzerland. Nautilus members work at sea and ashore. Sometimes we are referred to as the ‘Merchant Navy union’, but this doesn’t tell the whole story. Members include shipmasters, officers, cadets, ratings, yacht crew, VTS officers, harbourmasters, river boatmen, nautical college lecturers, maritime lawyers and even ship-based medical personnel.

💼Ever since the P&O Ferries jobs massacre of 2022, Nautilus International has been working hard at Westminster. 💼 We've been lobbying the government to protect maritime workers, and prevent other bad actors from using fire and rehire tactics to replace their UK employees with exploited labour. 🎥The UK government's new Employment Rights Bill addresses some of our key concerns. Watch the video explaining some of the provisions that protect seafarers 🎥

What's next for officers taking industrial action at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary? As the negotiations continue and members are balloted on continuing the strikes, we look at the situation and ask whether the UK government is yet prepared to make a serious pay offer to redress the years of austerity.

🥇 A big success thanks to the courage, resilience and solidarity of Nautilus members! 🥇 After months of campaigning, protest and negotiations, workers at Lloyd's Register have won a pay increase and union recognition from their employer. The process began over a year ago when employees faced high inflation and asked Nautilus to represent them in the battle for pay restoration. When the company refused to engage, the members gathered support, helped others to join the Union, and eventually we brought management to the table. After months of resistance, Lloyd's Register agreed to recognise the hard work of their team with a pay increase five times higher than their initial offer, benefiting all employees, and recognized Nautilus as the official union representing them. 🎥 Watch the video below! 🎥

📑👩🏻💻👨🏼✈️🚢📝UK MERCHANT NAVY AND FISHING FLEET DEMOGRAPHICS SURVEY Due to another big surge in responses, current UK #seafarers can still respond to Maritime Charities Group (MCG’s) major welfare survey by 23:59 on Tues 8 Oct . It takes just 20 mins - don't miss out, have your say on maritime welfare today! The MCG has commissioned a study of the estimated size and demographic profile of the UK's Merchant Navy and fishing fleet personnel and their dependants, from 2019–2040. This research will cover UK nationals (aged 18+) who are working/former seafarers, their families, and service-providers working in maritime welfare charities. It will include all UK seafarers, except those covered by a separate project being conducted by Greenwich Hospital, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, and the RAF Benevolent Fund on the UK’s RAF, and RNRM populations. The MCG will use this data to better understand the welfare needs, locations, challenges and changes facing seafarers and their dependants. Seafarers can take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/euy6ScHU

📣🌠Nautilus shortlisted for prestigious Investors in People Awards 2024!🌠📣 Exciting news! Following on from Nautilus International's gold standard accreditation from human resources assessment body Investors in People (IIP), we are thrilled that we are now shortlisted for Best Purpose Driven People Community in The Investors in People Awards 2024! This nomination is a wonderful recognition for the Union's achievement of a global Gold accreditation from IIP - which means it is among an exclusive group of organisations which achieve that standard. Importantly the accreditation demonstrates that the Union has a clear commitment to the people who make up the organisation’s staff. It also means all three of the Union's national branches in the UK, Netherlands and Switzerland – as well as the charity Nautilus Welfare Fund – are now officially recognised for their high standards of people management and staff development. In this video our general secretary Mark Dickinson explains why we take part in the scheme: ▶️: https://lnkd.in/eTRMmRdm
