 When Your Job Search Involves More Wishing Than Working (and How to Fix It!) Let's face it, the job search can feel like you're stranded on a desert island, desperately rubbing two sticks together hoping for a spark of opportunity. (Don't worry, that rarely works for starting a fire, either.) Recently, I chatted with someone about their job search, and when I suggested updating their LinkedIn profile, their response was a simple, "Eh, that's my wish." Look, here's the deal: While wishing on a star might be a good movie plot, it's not the most effective job search strategy. But fear not, fellow job seekers! There's a way out of the wishing well and into the land of opportunity! Here's how to ditch the "wishful thinking" and land that dream job: -Become a LinkedIn Lion (or Lioness!) -Craft a Killer Resume (No Wishing Required) Highlight your achievements and tailor it to each position you apply for. If you have a friend in the midst of a job search and you want to support them, don't ask them how their job search is going. It can be a dreadful, draining process. They undoubtedly appreciate that you care about them and their search. But they may be exhausted and/or embarrassed about updating people on their struggles. This was certainly the case for me at multiple times. I hated having to tell people - even the most supportive friends and family in the world - that I was striking out. What can you do instead? Even asking "how are you?" instead of expressly asking about the job search can make a huge difference. That lets them know you're thinking them and gives them an opening to talk about the search if they want to, without feeling they they have to talk about it. #jobsearch #jobsearchtips

Job-hunting has never been easy. In years past, keeping our spirits up while searching for that one job that seemed to have our name on it has always been challenging. Things have changed post-COVID, however, and now it seems the world has dispensed with common sense, good manners, and civility. Looking for work has gotten more painful and soul-crushing, and everyone is sounding off with their own opinions; our best defense against giving up in utter despair is to avoid being sucked into negativity. All the traditional rules concerning attire, job search etiquette, resume length, networking, and cover letters have been tossed out the window. The line between sound professional advice and nonsense has blurred and no one can tell the difference anymore. Social media amplifies the fear and confusion with conflicting career advice. The result: people turning on each other with negative, discouraging remarks. The solution is to see things from the other person’s perspective. Treating others the way we’d like to be treated is eye-opening. A little kindness and compassion go a long way in fighting negativity; a prolonged job search is one of the toughest spiritual battles we can fight. Dispense hope to the struggling, not criticism.
