⚽ EURO Cup 2024 is onn and this time the battle for the football dominance on the continent is bigger than ever. With 24 teams taken to the pitch, around 3 million fans will be in the stands and billions watching from home, bars and fan zones and that’s big business. So, who’s making money and who’s paying?⚽ Let’s dig out some facts and numbers: The EURO Cup is organized by Union of European Football Association (UEFA). UEFA expects EURO 2024 to bring in 2.4 billion Euros Revenue most of all from the sale of TV and marketing rights including sponsorships from sponsors like Coca- Cola, Adidas, China’s Alibaba, Vivo, the state of Qatar and more. All these contracts will bring in around 2 Billion EURO plus sales from ticketing, hospitality and VIP Lounges. On the expense side, UEFA expects expenses of around 650 million EUROs including 330 million EUROs million in Prize Money for the competing team as well as the cost of IT and Infrastructure and salaries for the staff, referee and the rest. Netting out things, UEFA is expecting a profit of around 1.7 billion EUROs which is entirely tax-free due to agreement made with the German Government who’s missing out on 255 million EUROs. Also, the German Government will be spending additional 600 million EUROs for the privilege of hosting the tournament on stadium renovation, festivities and security. What if the E.U did the Olympics? I heard several voices asking the European Union to participate in the Olympics as one main "group". It could top the "Medal count" list with almost 100 gold medals, far in front of USA and China, both at 40. There are three reasons for that. #1 Identifying the athletes The CIO is not sure if 4 years would be enough for the E.U. to agree on the criteria that would allow European Athletes to win a selection for the games. (Reaching such a consensus can take up to 10 years in Brussels 😬) #2 Changing the rules After the first competitions, the CIO is worried that the E.U. would try to introduce new regulations that could advantage its athletes. (For example, starting the 100-meter dash a few decameters further). And everyone understands that most of the times, these regulations will actually disadvantage its own team through an overload of paperwork. #3 Retaliation Finally, the CIO is clearly scared to face retaliation after disappointing Olympic games for the E.U. It could face several hundred million euros in fines, new obligations and a potential antitrust lawsuit, for lack of competitors in "Olympic" activities. Long story short: surely, E.U. competitors did extremely well, but let's let them represent only their country!

While it's always fun and entertaining to see the world's greatest athletes converge in one city to compete and bring national pride, it's also interesting to see how cities/countries are becoming more reluctant to host global competitions. Even though the amount of revenue a global event could rake is appealing, it seems that host cities so often underestimate the expenditures, from bidding through completion: 2012's London events went over 75% the budget, while 2016's Rio events needed a $900 million bailout from the government. Qatar faced human rights controversies constructing their stadiums just to ensure they could accommodate competitions and fans visiting.
