THURSDAY 4/25 Stagflation Dots to connect: 1.       The US economy’s growth slowed faster than forecasted for Q1: 1.6% v expected 2.4%. 2.       This is in spite of massive government, deficit spending to win votes in swing states. 3.       Service inflation was up by 5.1% in Q1. 4.       Meanwhile in China: a.       Factories are exporting deflation (see the “get a good deal” graph in this article) b.      And, China’s 100+ car factories have massive overcapacity. c.       So must their supply-chain companies. 5.       How fast can Chinese auto-parts (or any) manufacturers open up an Amazon channel to sell more for less in the US? 6.       Extrapolate out these trends for the next few quarters. While I was not familiar with the term I was/am very familiar with the tactics it employs. The PICOS program, or Program for Improvement and Cost Optimization of Suppliers, is a strategic procurement initiative originally developed by General Motors in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It focuses on aggressively reducing the cost of parts supplied by vendors through a structured and, often, controversial approach to purchasing and supplier management.
