A phrase we need to reframe when we are focused on trauma-awareness and trauma-informed practices is Victim Mentality. The significant numbers of our workforce who have experienced real, profound trauma that has changed their development and their lives are in fact victims of some pretty heinous, often illegal things. Victim mentality has gotten a bad rap in today’s hyper-positivity culture. Even if you don’t say these words directly to your employee, if you are thinking them, sharing your thoughts on their “victim mentality” with others…you are minimizing the real, involuntary, autonomous nervous system response that is most likely the cause of the stuck behavior. Educating yourself and people leaders to spot trauma response, to properly have psychologically safe and trauma-informed conversations to help bring the individual back from the response, getting clear on what in your organization may be activating the trauma response and correcting it are imperative. Then have thoughtful, trauma-sensitive, trauma-responsive discussions about what the individual needs to reframe and adjust. This is a two-way street. If your organizational culture is the trigger be part of the solution. Reminder: Trauma is stored in the body. The initial response to activating behaviors is out of the individual’s control. Minimizing the response because you deem it victim mentality, laziness, negativity, etc. most often serves to further retraumatize as the individual was most likely told their feelings and responses were untrue, invalid, too much, not appropriate, going to cause them further pain and abuse. And helps no one including the organization. Instead of coming from a Mind over Matter, Hyper-Positivity vantage point, follow the 4 steps to creating a Loving Organization when you feel someone is acting like a victim. Your employee, your whole team, and your bottom line will thank you! Does that mean I think people should remain stuck? No. Does that mean I don’t think positive practices have a place? Nope. It means we have all the feelings and experiences for a reason. To negate them or try to override them because they are uncomfortable is not healthy and in the end results in less than positive things. #traumainformed #psychsafety #workplacewellbing #safework

Do you have high functioning anxiety? Signs can include perfectionism, overthinking, physical symptoms of anxiety, people pleasing and an inability to switch off. Sound familiar? This is how I used to feel. As a high performer in a busy workplace, everything was great from the outside. But internally, I would wake up each day, struggling with self-doubt. I wish there had been a book to help me recognise the signs of high functioning anxiety and what to do about it. So I wrote one! I hope the science-backed techniques help you manage high functioning anxiety. By applying these simple daily tools, finally I feel the way I have always wanted to......calm, engaged and loving my life. And the response to 'Beat High Functioning Anxiety Now' has been so good! Dr Kristy Goodwin, CSP called it 'a fabulous digital book packed with science and solutions.' I would love you to get a copy if it could help you or someone you care about. https://lnkd.in/gkdpUHg8 And remember, if no-one else has told you today, I'm proud of you.
