Our researcher Bronwen Deacon will be presenting at the CHER - Consortium of Higher Education Researchers conference at the Universität Luxemburg today. The paper, "Resisting Digital Change at Higher Education Institutions: Identifying Triggers and Countermeasures," by Dr. Melissa Laufer, Bronwen Deacon, Maricia A. Mende, Tiana Tschache, Dr. Len Ole Schäfer examines the emotional and organisational roots of resistance to #EdTech in universities.   Change at the university has often been difficult, characterised by tensions between tradition and innovation. #Digital change in particular has been met with critical voices. By studying 68 staff members across 8 European universities, our ‘Organisational Resilience and Creativity’ research team reveals that resistance often stems from feelings of being overwhelmed, fear of #technology, concerns about job security, and ideological conflicts surrounding what constitutes educational quality. 📣 New report featuring the Developing Business-Aware Academics project!  📣 The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) is calling for policy which removes barriers to cross-sector careers and the mobility of researchers. Our case study highlights how we’re supporting doctoral and early-career researchers through evidence-led training to engage more effectively and confidently beyond academia: “By building their confidence in engaging with non-academic partners we can ensure that, regardless of whether they remain in academia or move on to careers in industry, their expertise is recognised and applied for the benefit of society at large.” We champion the advantages of collaboration and movement between sectors both within and beyond academia, and we provide researchers with the tools to do so. I am honoured to have been invited by Joe Marshall to contribute to this year’s State of the Relationship Report produced by The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) The UK's innovation powerhouses – our universities and businesses – are facing headwinds. The NCUB's 2024 State of the Relationship report reveals a concerning trend: university-business collaboration, vital for economic growth and societal progress, is declining. The report identifies several challenges including: - Financial strain on universities impacting their ability to engage in research and knowledge exchange. - Geopolitical shifts creating uncertainty and barriers to international collaboration and talent flow. Despite these obstacles, the report points to a concerted effort to strengthen collaboration. This includes new policies, organisations, and initiatives to boost commercialisation, particularly through university spin-outs. The report stresses the urgency of reversing the decline in collaboration and scaling up its impact. This requires a joined-up approach from policymakers, universities, and businesses to foster a more connected and supportive ecosystem for innovation. Thanks to Sam Laidlaw, Andrew Jones, Jessica Corner, Rosalind Gill and Marie-Pierre Paquin for leading such an engaging discussion on these important topics. The first round of grants from Australia’s Economic Accelerator (AEA) are now open for application. These funds will turbocharge collaboration between researchers, universities and industry. A total of $180 million is available for researchers and their industry partners through the AEA Ignite (proof-of-concept) and AEA Innovate (proof-of-scale) grant programs: https://lnkd.in/gS9KXsRN The first round of grants will prioritise projects that align with one or more focus areas: critical and strategic minerals processing; sustainable fuels; digital agriculture; quantum; artificial intelligence (AI); and advanced manufacturing. Really delighted to see £1bn commitment into emerging industries and known, growing strengths of the UK’s University ecosystems. It’s an essential investment into academic resource and therefore development of the core technologies required to solve mass infrastructure problems across #netzero, #security, #infrastructure and #health. Investing in 4,000 world-class researchers with specialisms in AI, robotics, advanced materials/manufacturing, energy, quantum, techbio, cyber, signal processing/comms and simulation technologies is essential if the UK wants to maintain pace with the deepTech friendly ecosystems of the US and EU. It’s refreshing to see programs backed in regions that don’t necessarily align with their deemed sector expertise clusters - broadening accessibility and room for collaboration. The Centre for Doctoral Training I was fortunate to be a part of in University of Leeds was designed to focus on translation and commercialisation of next-gen health technologies. I hope this ethos is echoed in this next wave of funding the 65 new #CDTs to not only produce world-leading research, but also world-leading entrepreneurs and businesses that can truly have global impact. In November 2024, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy of the European Parliament (ITRE) published a draft report on the implementation of #HorizonEurope and recommendations for its successor, the tenth Research Framework Programme (#FP10). In its reaction to the report, EUA welcomes the ITRE recommendations, which align closely with the Association’s own vision for FP10. EUA especially welcomes the key recommendation of the report to preserve FP10 as a stand-alone EU programme and ensure that it becomes more user-oriented, science-led, effective, and efficiently implemented. However, the Association also identifies several recommendations within the draft report that require further attention: - EUA calls for caution on the ITRE’s support to the proposal to create two Councils in Pillar 2 – an Industrial Competitiveness and Technology Council and a Societal Challenges Council, as proposed in the #HeitorReport. While EUA supports the idea of establishing an independent body of R&I community representatives to guide the direction of Pillar 2 and reduce its dominance by policy objectives, industrial competitiveness and societal challenges cannot be effectively addressed in isolation. These two spheres are deeply intertwined, requiring collaboration between a variety of partners from different sectors, including universities, industry and civil society organisations. - The Association also takes note of the ITRE Committee’s proposal to place the European Research Council (ERC) and the European Innovation Council (#EIC) at the core of FP10 by allocating 50% of the programme’s budget to these two essential instruments. It is however crucial that the proposal carefully considers its implications for the programme’s other instruments, especially the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (#MSCA) and collaborative research projects currently housed within Pillar 2, particularly those at lower technology readiness levels (TRLs). - Finally, in response to the proposal to develop the alliances established under the #EuropeanUniversities initiatives into ‘European scientific institutes’, EUA reiterates that it is crucial to ensure the academic purpose and vision remain central to alliances and their cooperation models. Alliances are not tools for implementing external policy objectives – they are the result of collaboration among autonomous academic institutions. Building such deep, transnational partnerships takes time and sustained effort. Overburdening alliances with policy-driven goals risks undermining their potential, a concern that should be carefully considered in this specific proposal of the draft report.
