In August 2017, all my PRs were getting tons of pushback, nitpicking, never-ending discussions. In September 2017, all my PRs were getting accepted with positive comments. So what happened? Did I do anything different? Did I change in any way? No! I realised I was not in the right environment for me so I changed the environment. I left that company and joined Meta. This post is a kind reminder for everyone who feels they're not in the right environment. Interview, network, up-skill and do everything in your power to leave drama behind. Today we are celebrating a client starting their dream job at Meta ❤️ When we started working together, the problem they wanted to solve was to "not sound junior" based on feedback they received. They had difficulty structuring their interview responses to highlight their achievements and impact effectively, at the right level. Because they work on highly technical products, they needed guidance on how to explain their work in more strategic ways to interviewers who are not as technical. Emotion wise, they needed strategies to present themselves more confidently during interviews after failing the Meta interview before. Based on their problems, the way we solved it was crafting and practicing their responses to highlight their achievements and impact, rather than just focusing on execution and technical details. We also worked on confidence building and shifting their mindset for interviews, including meditating and healing together to get their vibes up when they were feeling low. Looking back on our journey, I am so excited for them, not just because of their dream Meta role, but because of all the inner work and healing that I've been able to provide the support for and witness. ❤️ ~~~ I help Product leaders get their dream roles in Big Tech. Celebrating 2 incredible years at Meta. I remember starting this journey some years ago by simply reaching out to a friend that works at Google and asking her if my desire to work in tech was achievable or not. That short 30mins conversation led to me taking strategic actions that got me an employment offer letter from Meta 3 months later. In my 2 years at Meta, I have learnt two key lessons: - People are currency: your network is a currency that should be built and nurtured. Invest in making meaningful connections, ask questions and tap into others’ expertise. - Continuous learning: The desire to learn more should be at an all time high. Information and knowledge is power. Opportunities cannot be leveraged or taken if the knowledge of it being available is not known. Your basic physical, mental, and financial health are P0 priorities. [1]. Maintenance of your close relationships is P1. [2] Keeping your job is just P3. [1] Building up emergency savings. Hitting the gym. Going to the store for fresh groceries or setting up grocery delivery. Getting that yoga session in. [2] These will outlast your job or startup. And when your startup or job goes south, your close relationships will help you weather the storm and bounce back. [3] Many people treat it as P0. Oddly, keeping your job a P3 priority increases your performance at your job.

During my (too short) couple years at #Meta before returning to #Google, I was really impressed by Meta engineering culture centred around Tribes/virtual teams, high IC autonomy, and a bias toward failing fast. I’m supporting a culture change effort that would benefit from learning more. Can anyone point me to material I can share about #Meta #Eng culture? A true senior engineer is like Captain America: They shield their teammates and make them stronger. A fake senior engineer is like Thanos: They horde all the knowledge for themselves and sacrifice the little ones when things get tough. If you want to become a senior engineer, don't just focus on your own work. Think about how you can make the engineers around you better. It took me 5 years to become a Meta senior engineer, because I didn't get this. I coded faster and cleaner than everyone else, but wasn't getting promoted. I took the learnings from my struggle and then mentored 5+ Meta new grads all the way to senior in just 2.5 years years, faster than 95% of FAANG engineers.
