From Tibooburra in the top of the state, down to Menindee and across to White Cliffs, people in Far West NSW will start seeing even more support throughout the region with a Mobile Service Centre being redirected to provide hands on assistance when claiming the Power Outage Support Grants: - $200 one-off payment per adult in the affected area, estimated to be 15,500 residents - $400 payment for small to medium businesses affected, estimated to be 1200 businesses. Together with the NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA), our Mobile Service Centre team will travel around the region and, with guidance from authorities working in local communities, provide face-to-face assistance to impacted areas of the far west over the next few weeks. A Service NSW Business Concierge will also be onboard to help business owners with their applications for the business grant. Service NSW team members will also continue their support of the affected communities on the ground at the Recovery Assistance Point (RAP) which has been set up in Broken Hill and is being run by the NSW Reconstruction Authority. Did you know that your cell phone can lose service during emergencies due to network overload or outages? 📞 Landlines remain a vital communication tool because they rely on physical infrastructure, ensuring a stable connection when it matters most. This LA Times article on the recently released report from the Hawaii attorney general on the Maui wildfires is worth the read. Among several takeaways from this tragedy, it highlights the importance of emergency communications plans when telecom carriers' networks are down. I would note that planning for these eventualities has come up often in the electric sector -- via NERC sponsored GridEx table-top exercises, in particular. Ongoing coordination across critical infrastructure sectors on this topic is a necessity: https://lnkd.in/ea8jHRWC

This is noteworthy due to its social impact and state level state emergency declaration! Gov. Josh Green, M.D. signed an Emergency Proclamation Friday to avoid loss of telecommunications services for hundreds of Hawaiian Home Lands households across the state. On May 30, 2024, Sandwich Isle Communications, a private company that provides phone and internet services to many customers on Hawaiian Home Lands, announced through an email to customers that services would cease on June 1, 2024. The termination of services could leave approximately 1,500 households and several business, schools, and other institutions on Hawaiian Home Lands without phone and/or internet services, according to department officials. #emergencymanagement #crisismanagement #risk

The recent world-wide CrowdStrike outages spilled over into Alberta, affecting 9-1-1 call services for a number of municipalities. Strathcona County was not impacted, and was able to provide emergency call services to our residents and key audiences as usual. The County was also able to provide coverage for our partners who faced disruptions, ensuring that emergency calling services continued to function in their municipalities. This robust system of redundancy worked as it should have. We covered for our partners today, as they will do for us. A regional 9-1-1 call partnership among municipalities will continue to ensure that Albertans across the province remain safe if their local 9-1-1 centre is down. The County is currently not providing support to its partners for 9-1-1 call reception as their operations have returned to normal following the impacts.
