Funding secured to create a new Coastal & Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility! 🌊 The project aims to use the specialist expertise of marine and maritime research at the University of Southampton to accelerate the development of technological solutions to climate change. 🌍 Project leader and one of our SMMI Deputy Directors, Professor Fraser Sturt, explains: “Climate change means our oceans are warming, storms are becoming more frequent and coastal and river flooding are more likely. This poses a threat to the future of many vulnerable heritage sites which lie in the sea just off our shores, in waterways and submerged in lakes. “These sites can unlock hidden histories – telling us about how people once lived, how they moved and migrated, traded, and shared ideas and sadly also where conflict arose. However, the sites are also often difficult to explore due to shallow waters or rocky inlets.” Provided by The UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the £2M package will help fund 3D scanning technology and remotely operated vehicles to explore our waters and preserve maritime heritage sites - including shipwrecks, historic ports, and ancient dwellings – in millimetre scale detail. 🔎 Find out more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/evxFg6gA

Do you have 5-10 minutes to have your say about what is important to you in making a plan for the future of nature in Cambridgeshire, one in which nature and people flourish together? @Natural Cambridgeshire is working on the creation of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (as Cambridgeshire County Council undertakes this commission on behalf of the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority). The following link will take you to a short online survey for individuals (or questionnaire for organisations) to help gather insights: > What is it that you value most about your local nature environment? > Where do you love to go locally to enjoy the benefits of nature? > Why is the natural environment important to you? > What do you think we need to do collectively to value nature more? Please do spread the word. https://lnkd.in/eQS2Ww5f

Some institutions appear more visionary than others. The focus should be water and not forests. Until we come to terms with this, we will never appreciate how the forest is the most critical natural asset that protects water and mitigates extremes triggered by too much or too little water. The discourse in BC continues to be forest-centric when in fact it should be water-centric. The only way we can appreciate the power of forest is when we fully understand and recognize its role in protecting our water and in mitigating extremes in the form of floods, droughts, landslides, wildfires, and heat domes. I blame this sad situation on the reduce and isolate modus operandi which continues to misguide us at an unbearable cost to society and the environment.
