✨ Exciting News from Paris! ✨ I attended the AESOP Annual Conference in Paris from July 8th to 12th. This year, I presented my paper, "On the Trail of a Policy: Rendering Business Improvement Districts Mobile and Experimented in Southern European Cities," which is currently under publication in Urban Geography. Through a comparative dialogue between Spanish and Portuguese cities, I argued for some caution against equating the presence and future circulation of urban policies exclusively out of more neo-liberal policy contexts, planning cultures, and political-institutional infrastructures. I demonstrated that theorizing policy mobilities from Southern Europe can be a fruitful approach to exploring how the genetic interconnectedness of urban processes can be mobilized to critique and perhaps extend concepts in urban theory through comparison. In my presentation, I made five key points: 💡 Policies do not always have a single point of origin: The movement of policies is rhizomatic in its characteristics. 💡 Rethinking scalar assumptions: Theorizing from a Southern-Mediterranean context allows us to reconsider some scalar assumptions in urban policy mobilities studies, emphasizing the centrality of scalar intertwining. 💡 Neglected socio-legal dimensions: Urban policy mobilities have overlooked socio-legal dimensions in different planning cultures, which are crucial for fully understanding policy circulation. 💡 Pilot programs as instances of policy learning/adaptation: Pilot programs are integral to policymaking processes and practices (another paper is currently under review in which we explore this particular aspect). 💡 The social labor of academics as policy mobilizers: Highlighting the role of academics in mobilizing and shaping policies. 2024 UK-Ireland Planning Research Conference, 2-4 Sept '24, University of Reading: Planning for Nature/Nature of Planning. Focus on how the multiple crises facing our natural environment are interacting with the multiple planes along which the planning discipline is evolving: Planning for Nature; and Nature of Planning. Abstract deadline: 10th May 11.59pm. Abstracts should be a maximum of 250 words long, excluding references. A paper title and up to five Harvard style references can be provided in separate fields. Authors are asked provide up to five keywords. Detailed conference programme will be published in July, once all abstract acceptances are confirmed. Outline programme is as follows: Monday 2nd September: PhD workshop, Planning Schools Forum annual meeting, opening event on 'Planning for Nature', welcome reception & RTPI Research Awards. Tuesday 3rd September: Parallel tracks, half-day field trips and evening event on the 'Future of the Planning Profession'. Wednesday 4th September: Parallel tracks and closing event on the 'Future of Planning Education'.
