As a guardian for boarding school students, I often assist with holiday break arrangements. During these times, students can either return to their home country or stay with a host family. For many Asian students, the request to stay with an Asian host family is not just about language or familiarity—it’s about food! They often miss the comfort of their home cuisine.
Today, I’d like to share a bit about the meal arrangements typically offered by homestays. In a local host family, breakfast is usually self-served, with students free to enjoy toast, cereal, milk, or muffins. Lunch tends to be light, such as a bagel with smoked salmon or a hot dog. For dinner, you’ll often find hot meals like pasta, meat, or pizza.
However, in Asian homestays, the meals reflect more familiar tastes. Breakfast might include congee, dumplings, or noodles in hot soup. Even something as simple as stir-fried vermicelli with egg can bring a lot of joy to students craving the flavors of home. Some hosts even offer special dinners like hot pot or BBQ, which—while sometimes at a higher cost—are much appreciated.
As a guardian, I love seeing the food photos my students share with me. It’s clear these meals bring them a sense of comfort and happiness, and that’s what we strive for—providing options that make students feel at home, wherever they are.
