Day 7: TJCHEF DELIES 🧡🤍 Hi LinkedIn Fam, it's 3 days to convocation!🤭🎉 And it's Day 7 of my #ConvocationCountdownChallenge Cooking started as a hobby for me, something I enjoyed doing in my spare time. Little did I know it would grow into a thriving business during my university days. As a studentpreneur, I ran TJCHEF DELIES, a catering brand that provides high-quality meals and pastries that are not just delicious but also salubrious to our customers. What started with small orders soon turned into delivering up to 500 plates of Jollof Rice and other meals to events like conferences, dinners, and other gatherings during weekends. Managing all this while being a full-time student was no small feat. Thankfully, I had a kitchen assistant who supported me during peak periods. Yet, balancing entrepreneurship with academics meant giving extra hours to studying and sacrificing leisure to achieve my goals. I’m grateful for the grace to not only successfully run this business as a student but also graduate with a First-Class degree in Mathematics! The experience equipped me with several valuable skills: ✓ Time Management: Balancing academics with business demands required deliberate scheduling. ✓ Customer Relationship Management: Meeting customer expectations and handling feedback taught me effective communication and excellent delivery. ✓ Strategic Thinking: Planning for bulk orders and deliveries refined my ability to make quick, informed decisions. ✓ Vision-Driven Persistence: Every order delivered brought me closer to my dream of building something impactful. The vision for TJCHEF DELIES is far beyond campus. I intend to grow it into a globally recognized food company, known for delivering high-quality, delicious, and healthy meals. I’m immensely grateful for this journey; it refined me, shaped my character, and gave me practical lessons in business management. To my fellow students or recent graduates who have entrepreneurial aspirations: don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. Start where you are, with what you have, and trust the process. The lessons you learn along the way are invaluable. Here’s to building dreams, one step at a time! Curious to see more of what we do at TJCHEF DELIES? Seize the opportunity…. Last night was my daughter’s 8th-grade graduation. Upon learning of the graduation date, one of the school’s parents, a savvy businesswoman and restaurant owner, wasted no time in extending an invitation for families to gather at her restaurant after the ceremony to “toast and celebrate.” When families arrived, they were greeted with a thoughtfully curated prix-fixe menu. As a result of this invitation, the restaurant was packed on a Wednesday night, which I imagine would have typically been a slower evening. Here’s why this move was brilliant: - By orchestrating this post-graduation gathering, the restaurant owner effectively induced FOMO (fear of missing out) among the families and graduates. - This served as an invaluable opportunity for the restaurant owner to showcase her brand to a captive audience. - It provided a great way to acquire new customers. - And to win repeat business once customers experienced the excellent food, service, and ambiance. Whether celebrating a graduation, a birthday, a little league win, or another occasion, is there an event your business can leverage to create memorable experiences and drive growth? At Emma's Torch, our culinary curriculum and our cafes are inextricably intertwined. It's part of our social enterprise DNA. Our cafes are a pillar of our program. They give our students real work experience. This work experience provides on-the-job skills that gives students a leg up in their job search. Since we know that every student will train at our cafes, we design the menu with extreme intention. When we craft our menu ~by the way, our spring menu launched a couple of weeks ago!~ we take into account seasonality, customer demand, and what culinary techniques we want our students to learn. For example: 🥖 Our menu teaches students three bread-making techniques 🍳 Our menu teaches students three types of egg cookery 🐟 Our menu teaches students how to butcher and fillet all kinds of proteins When you step into one of our cafes, you become a participant in our living classrooms. Each customer plays an important role in our students' development. Now... If anyone wants to taste our newest menu offerings, shoot me a message. I would love to eat breakfast / brunch / lunch with you! #workforcetraining #culinarytraining #refugeeswelcome

I took a sabbatical and published a cookbook 💁♀️ An idea for a book that made seafood more accessible for home cooks hatched on a road trip from Bundaberg in 2021. Fast forward to 2024, Harry Butterfield got his name as ‘The Fish Guy’ on MasterChef Australia season 16. He came fourth (the legend) and our life completely pivoted. The last 6 months have been pure chaos but with a sabbatical from my fam at Deloitte Digital I have had the opportunity to FINALLY finish the book. I’m really proud of it. In fact, it’s really good. A Fish A Day exists to prove that seafood isn’t scary. It’s for seafood lovers, and those that need a little convincing... What's inside: 1. How to avoid 'fishy' seafood with a complete buying and storing guide written in collaboration with our friends at Miami Fish Market 2. Simple recipes and show-stopper recipes to test your new fish-lord skills 3. Harrys MasterChef expert tips and stories from cooking hundreds (maybe thousands) of recipes 5. Our go-to sauces to pair with, or without, seafood Check it out via the link, I would love your feedback. https://lnkd.in/gUD9DJgx There is so much more to say about this process, and so many people to thank - more musings coming soon 🐠

Did you always plan to be in the restaurant industry? 🍽️ When speaking with big restaurant chains or lecturing at universities, Our resident interviewer, Chuck Currie often asked, "How many of you planned to work in food service?" The surprising truth: only about 10% would raise their hands. For many, this industry was a side hustle while they pursued other goals. But something happened along the way—they fell in love with it. ❤️ It's a reminder that passion can find you in unexpected places, and sometimes, the best plans are the ones you didn’t make. If you've experienced this, I’d love to hear your story.
