There aren’t enough Northern businesses winning awards. 🥇🥈🥉 I’ve been fortunate to attend a number of conferences and award events, which are typically held in London, and every time I come away feeling that there is a real lack of representation from the North. Being a Northern lass I can confidently say there are some incredible brands and individuals doing really great things up here, but more often than not, they’re not winning, they’re not shortlisted, they’re not nominating, but most importantly they’re not even aware of them.. I rarely see any content about awards until they’ve happened and someone I follow on LinkedIn shares their new accolade, or the chance to catch up with friends. I can’t help but wonder if we are losing our invites in the post OR need do we need to shout louder about what we’re doing up ‘ere. What do you think the barrier is? 🤔 Are we celebrating our wins enough? 🤔 Do we know which awards to enter? 🤔 Do we value winning awards? 🤔 Is it purely because they’re mainly held in London?

At our events agency, DEIB has always been top of mind. We're proud to be champions of DEIB, striving to incorporate these principles thoughtfully into everything we do. A prime example of this is a recent nationwide event campaign series we executed for a brand. The goal was to engage meaningfully with the Black and Latinx communities, and we knew that authenticity would be key to our success. To ensure we were truly connecting with these communities, we went beyond surface-level engagement. For each event in the series, we made a conscious effort to seek out venues owned by members of the Black and Latinx communities. This decision wasn't just about ticking a box, it was about creating a genuine, inclusive experience that resonated with our target audience. By choosing these venues, we not only supported local businesses within these communities but also created an environment where attendees felt truly seen and valued. This approach allowed us to foster a deeper connection between the brand and the communities we were engaging with. This example illustrates how we strive to thoughtfully integrate DEIB into our strategies and actions. It's not about grand statements—it's about keeping these principles at the forefront of our minds and consistently applying them in practical, meaningful ways. Edinburgh B Corp 500 Update! 👋 Last Wednesday (2nd Oct) we held our first workshop with 10 fantastic local businesses. Also in attendance was our partner, Edinburgh Chambers of Commerce, who used the time to look at the Chambers through the B Impact Assessment lens. I (Jayne) had planned to capture some video highlights, but in the excitement, I completely forgot to press record. 🙈 So, we're sticking with the classic written update this time.... It was a day filled with insights. We got stuck into the B Impact Assessment as a group, had some really insightful, pragmatic and meaningful conversations, and enjoyed the Whisky Experience's excellent coffee and pastries. ☕ A huge thank you to the Whisky Experience team for providing us with a larger space. This allowed companies to bring more team members along - something we couldn't accommodate at first. Seeing teams tackle this journey together really highlighted how the B Corp process can inspire change across an entire organisation. We're so convinced of the benefits that we want to make this a standard feature of our workshops moving forward. More space, more minds, more potential for positive impact across Edinburgh. 💡 We have 1 more workshop together as a cohort in November before we move into the individual consultation phase. There are so many reasons that being involved with Awards ceremonies works, but why do we run them? For us it is simple, we want to celebrate the businesses in each of our cities (Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Exeter) - We are connectors in our cities and bring businesses together to build relationships with new/old/potential clients. Since the announcement of the finalists in this year’s EADT Suffolk Business Awards, I’ve been reflecting on the unexpected insights and learnings of being on ‘that side’ of the award process. For those who don’t know, we’ve been lucky enough to be on the recipient end of a judging panel (and to have emerged victorious twice). The very practice of allowing that external assessment of yourself and your business is, as so many of you know only too well, somewhat intimidating – no matter how sure you are of your business and your experience. This time, however, and having historically won the Customer Service category in both Suffolk and Norfolk, I felt incredibly honoured to be asked to judge this particular category. Initially, I found myself thinking ‘this will be a breeze’, and that I had nothing to fear or consider. What I found, however, is that it was far more of an opportunity for self-reflection and benchmarking than I might have considered prior to taking part. How can you not be faced with an entry or a conversation from a vibrant goal-setting business, and not find yourself looking at how this compares to what you do, or how you reached this point in the journey? I’m someone who has always been of the view that a child can teach an adult as much as the adult can teach the child – and I suppose this exercise is similar. I learned from their desire, entrepreneurship and their unique approaches to managing customer interaction. My takeaways for anyone considering being a business award judge: -           Do your homework on the business and seek to raise questions which are truly beneficial for your learning of them and their understanding of you. -           Be self-reflective (not selfish) throughout the process, considering whether the activity leads itself to more learning and development you might require. -           Embrace the chance to extend your network and relationships in directions you may never have considered. -           Take time to reflect on the process with your own colleagues or peers, being sure to bring to mind particular areas which now seem evident for your own business improvement or for your chance to become active in the art of mentoring.
