Make sure they have enough time for a healthy breakfast. 🍎Healthy Breakfast: Ensure your child has a nutritious breakfast to fuel their day. Quick options like oatmeal, smoothies, or whole-grain toast can be lifesavers. ✅Create a Checklist: Use a morning checklist to ensure nothing is forgotten, from brushing teeth to packing lunch. Evening Routine Tips: 📚Homework Time: Set a specific time for homework each evening, and create a quiet, distraction-free space for study. 📖Wind-Down Activities: Encourage relaxing activities before bed, such as reading or listening to calming music, to help your child unwind. 🛏️Consistent Bedtime: Establish a regular bedtime that allows for 8-10 hours of sleep, depending on your child’s age. Another way we can provide support to our children while in school, and the teachers that teach them, is by prioritizing sleep. Most school-aged children can perform at their best with 9-12 hours of sleep each night. But with a 6:30 am wake up, to be at school and ready for the day by 8 am, means that most children would do well if they went to bed between 6 and 9 PM each night. It only takes 20 minutes of sleep loss for productivity and reaction times to start to decline. If kids are experiencing several hours of sleep loss, not only does their productivity and reaction time decline more, but it also becomes difficult for the brain to focus, encode information to memory and control emotions. We greatly value education in this country. I do too, I have a Master’s Degree. So, to help our kids and teachers achieve success in the classroom, kids must start their day feeling rested and alert. Consistency is often the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about sleep routines. But here’s a thought—what if that consistency actually needs to change as children grow? For many families, holding onto the same early bedtime as their child ages might seem beneficial, but it can actually work against the natural shifts in sleep biology, especially in adolescence. In my latest blog post, I dive into why bedtimes need to evolve as our learners move through different stages of development. This is particularly crucial for the autistic community, where sleep disruptions are already more common. For teens, for example, the body’s natural sleep cycle shifts, pushing sleepiness later into the evening. Forcing an early bedtime can increase sleep resistance and may even lead to chronic sleep deprivation. By adjusting bedtimes and routines to align with these natural changes, families can set their learners up for better nights—and better days. 🤔 Curious about how these adjustments work? Check out the blog for practical strategies and tips to support healthy sleep at any age.
