Another way we can provide support to our children while in school, and the teachers that teach them, is by prioritizing sleep. Most school-aged children can perform at their best with 9-12 hours of sleep each night. But with a 6:30 am wake up, to be at school and ready for the day by 8 am, means that most children would do well if they went to bed between 6 and 9 PM each night. It only takes 20 minutes of sleep loss for productivity and reaction times to start to decline. If kids are experiencing several hours of sleep loss, not only does their productivity and reaction time decline more, but it also becomes difficult for the brain to focus, encode information to memory and control emotions. We greatly value education in this country. I do too, I have a Master’s Degree. So, to help our kids and teachers achieve success in the classroom, kids must start their day feeling rested and alert.
