Another way we can provide support to our children while in school, and the teachers that teach them, is by prioritizing sleep. Most school-aged children can perform at their best with 9-12 hours of sleep each night. But with a 6:30 am wake up, to be at school and ready for the day by 8 am, means that most children would do well if they went to bed between 6 and 9 PM each night. It only takes 20 minutes of sleep loss for productivity and reaction times to start to decline. If kids are experiencing several hours of sleep loss, not only does their productivity and reaction time decline more, but it also becomes difficult for the brain to focus, encode information to memory and control emotions. We greatly value education in this country. I do too, I have a Master’s Degree. So, to help our kids and teachers achieve success in the classroom, kids must start their day feeling rested and alert. It's a well-known fact that sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle and classroom performance, especially in the teenage years. But what does sleep look like in teens today, and how can we create education and dialogue around this important topic? The Sleep 101 "Let's Sleep" Program, in association with Harvard University, is a leading sleep hygiene education module that has been implemented in classrooms all over the US. In a project led by Brynne O'Hare of the Challenge Success Student Advisory Council, the goal is to gather feedback from teens primarily in the high school years to gauge the effectiveness of the program and see how Challenge Success can create media to inspire a broader geographical range of students to do one thing--sleep! Teenagers/young adults can take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/gVf6uQB7 Learn more about Sleep 101 here: https://lnkd.in/gGi5DiKF

Should schools start later so kids get more sleep? It’s early September and kids are going back to school again. ⏰ The perfect time to bring up school start times! Sadly, many kids need to wake up so early for education, that their brain cannot even learn much. 🧠 Sleep deprived, their brain cannot encode new information, consolidate that information- let alone retrieve it. But beyond learning capacity, I am far more worried about the impact of sleep loss on their health. 🩺 Physical health: sleep loss makes kids more likely to become overweight, develop type 2 diabetes or simply catch the flu more often. ❤️🩹 Mental health: tired kids are more anxious, depressed, hyperactive and less socially engaged. We have to stop this and do what’s best for these kids instead of what best for everyone else’s schedule. In fact, some studies show that teachers’ wellbeing also increases when school times are delayed! This article by Emily Oster does a great job at summarizing the science and making the case for change. Who’s in? Time to get educators and public officials and everyone else on board! #teenagers #sleep #health #kids #mentalhealth #schooltimes
