It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 2 weeks since Regenerative Food Systems Investment Europe - my mind is still buzzing from all of the inspirational panels and conversations. Many many thanks to Sarah Day Levesque and Rachel Ringle for cultivating such a welcoming, action-oriented community. 🌎🌱 I was happy to lead a workshop to share the in-progress outputs from the Regenerative Agriculture Working Group convened by Proof and Trailhead Capital. Farmers and founders are facing increased regulatory and investor pressure to report on their impact, without adequate measurement support. We had an insightful discussion on regenerative impact measurement filled with questions and feedback from farmers, founders, funders, and researchers. It was an amazing chance to hear from people like Loekie Schreefel, who is leading research on regenerative impact measurement at Wageningen University & Research, and Casper Zulim de Swarte from the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. My key takeaways on regenerative impact measurement from RFSI include: 1. Importance of both practice and outcome metrics 2. Need to balance standardization and customization 3. Making the connection to systems change 4. Providing support to farmers and founders 5. Today we hosted the Hybrid Conference " Nourishing Europe - Financing the path to resilient and sustainable food systems?".    Thank you to all who joined us, and to our panellists. Here are the key takeaways from our speakers:    🔸Martin Van Driel from European Commission   “The government budgets are not enough. We will need to look at other resources, private resources, if possible, which can be banks, but also the consumers, the value chain, which will have a role to play.”    🔸MEP Herbert Dorfmann   “The CAP can be a key driver of sustainable food production in Europe, but we must consider all its dimensions: ecological, social, and economic. A farmer who fails economically cannot produce food that is ecologically sustainable.”    🔸 Faustine Bas-Defossez from the European Environmental Bureau   “By fuelling climate breakdown and destroying ecosystems, Europe's current food systems threaten food production and millions of livelihoods, harming current and future EU competitiveness and costing EU taxpayers billions each year. EU funds must be channelled towards a sustainable future that puts nature, farmers and human health at its heart.”    🔸Marion Picot from CEJA Young Farmers  “Young farmers are amongst the most willing to invest in their future. They have an innovative mindset and aspire to make an impact. They are also facing barriers in their access to finance: lack of capital and collaterals, little to no buffer space for the unforeseen, and a finance ecosystem that is not adapted to farm-specific needs.”    🔸Chris Adamo from Danone  “One of the learnings for us has been how do we work upstream with farmers more directly. We are doing that in many countries, primarily with dairy. We are not just buying the commodity, we are partnering with the farms, we are trying to understand what are their challenges. We are thinking about it in a regenerative agriculture context. Fundamentally, it is a broad holistic framework that we can apply to almost any farming system for us to learn what are the challenges that farmers face. Regenerative agriculture is not just a theoretical concept—real-world examples show the immense potential it has, and with the right policies and support, we can scale these benefits across Europe and beyond. What are the standout moments and key insights that are driving us forward for the next EU policy cycle? 🌾 Farmers first! Policy makers must shift from offering subsidies to providing genuine support, ensuring that the transition to regenerative practices doesn't reduce farmers' incomes. 📊 The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should adopt an outcome-based approach, using photosynthesis measurement as a key indicator for success and sustainability. 🌱 Agriculture must be profitable within planetary boundaries. Long-term objectives are crucial, and farmers should be rewarded for their ecosystem services, shifting the risk away from them. 🇪🇺 The green agenda is progressing, with 32% of CAP funding for sustainability. Member States need to take charge of implementing effective reforms. The next European Commission should revive the Food Systems Directive to create a strong legal framework for cohesive, sustainable agriculture across Europe. 🤝A holistic approach is crucial. Industry and policy must work together, focusing on terroir-specific strategies that reflect the unique needs of different landscapes. As Stefania Avanzini shared during the event, OP2B emphasizes a results-based strategy that not only supports farmers economically but also nurtures our soils, safeguards water resources, preserves biodiversity, and mitigates climate emissions. To accelerate the transition, we urge the adoption of policies that promote public-private collaboration to finance and de-risk farmers' transition.    We’d like to thank Pernod Ricard for organizing and hosting this inspiring event and all participants who shared their knowledge and ideas! 🌱 Can Employee Ownership (EO) Help Scale Agroecology? 🌱   Many agroecological food and farming businesses risk losing their core values to outside investors. Our new report, co-published with The Open University, explores how Riverford Organic Farmers journey to employee ownership (EO) can protect the long-term mission and values of these enterprises, balancing the needs of people, profit, and planet. 🌍   Key Insights from the Report:   🔹 Long-term Resilience: EO has helped Riverford build long-term resilience by protecting the business from external pressures like mergers and acquisitions, ensuring that its mission and values are preserved for future generations.   🔹 Economic and Environmental Benefits: EO fosters innovation and productivity by empowering workers with a stake in the company’s success. In food and farming enterprises, this model can drive improvements in environmental sustainability, reduce staff turnover, and enhance employee engagement.   🔹Aligning Profit with Principles: Riverford's EO model balances financial success with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and workplace fairness.   🔹Cultural and Leadership Shifts: The transition to EO required significant cultural shifts. Riverford implemented leadership training, performance reviews, and open communication structures to empower employees. EO also helped transition the leadership structure from top-down to a more horizontal and inclusive model.   🔹Recommendations for Policy and Support: The report calls for increased government support to streamline EO transitions, providing access to capital, and raising awareness of the benefits of EO in the food and farming sector. It emphasizes the need for accessible funding and reduced legal barriers to help smaller enterprises transition to this model.
