What an incredible 3 days of immersing myself in the most profound knowledge and experiences about #investing, #FoodTech, #VerticalFarming, and #SocialUrbanFarming! 🌱💡 I had the privilege to present our EU-funded project: Gamification for Inclusion and Sustainability in Vertical Farming alongside Edugarden AVF , and @Meike, and thanks to A huge thanks to Jan Bredack David Meszaros Marcos Juarez Nicolau, Marc Oshima Wim Roosens Joel Cuello Isabelle van Doorn, Christer Tilk , @Sahul Hamed, Endre Thesen Harnes, Robert Carlsson Alexander Jaworski and Nina Kapitan , amongst many others … I was also very lucky to strengthen my relationship with the inspiring Nikos Simos —a man from Agritecture of great determination and vision. 🙌 We were fortunate to visit GreenSpaceManufaktur—a local microgreens farm in #Dortmund, #Germany. 🌿💪 Special thanks to Christine Zimmermann-Loessl and Susanna Lössl for being fantastic hosts and standing strong amidst the challenges. Following from last post, there are many nursery activities I often wonder the impact of carbon sequestration impact they contribute. Does anyone out there know if this AI generated calculation has merit. 1. **Trees:** - Trees are the most significant contributors to carbon sequestration in ornamental landscapes. - **Young trees:** Sequester approximately 1-10 kg of CO2 per tree per year. - **Mature trees:** Can sequester between 20-200 kg of CO2 per tree per year, depending on the species and size. 2. **Shrubs:** - **Small to medium shrubs:** Typically sequester around 0.5-2 kg of CO2 per shrub per year. - **Large shrubs:** Can sequester 2-10 kg of CO2 per shrub per year. 3. **Herbaceous Plants and Groundcovers:** - These generally sequester less carbon compared to woody plants. - On average, they might sequester around 0.1-1 kg of CO2 per square meter per year. ### Estimation Steps 1. **Inventory of Plants:** - List the types and numbers of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants in the landscape. 2. **Species-Specific Data:** - Obtain growth rates and biomass accumulation data for the specific species used. 3. **Calculate Biomass:** - Estimate the above-ground and below-ground biomass using allometric equations specific to the plant species. 4. **Convert Biomass to CO2 Sequestered:** - Use the carbon content of biomass (approximately 50%) and convert it to CO2 equivalent (multiply by 3.67, the ratio of the molecular weights of CO2 to carbon). ### Example Calculation Suppose a landscape contains the following: - 10 mature oak trees - 20 large shrubs - 50 square meters of herbaceous plants **Trees:** - Average sequestration: 100 kg CO2 per tree per year - Total for trees: 10 trees * 100 kg/tree = 1000 kg CO2/year **Shrubs:** - Average sequestration: 5 kg CO2 per shrub per year - Total for shrubs: 20 shrubs * 5 kg/shrub = 100 kg CO2/year **Herbaceous Plants:** - Average sequestration: 0.5 kg CO2 per square meter per year - Total for herbaceous plants: 50 m² * 0.5 kg/m² = 25 kg CO2/year **Total Sequestration:** - Trees: 1000 kg CO2/year - Shrubs: 100 kg CO2/year - Herbaceous plants: 25 kg CO2/year **Grand Total:** - 1000 + 100 + 25 = 1125 kg CO2/year (or 1.125 metric tons CO2/year) ### Considerations - **Plant Growth and Maintenance:** Regular pruning and removal of biomass can reduce the net sequestration. - **Soil Carbon:** Enhanced by healthy plant growth and organic matter inputs. - **Site Specificity:** Climate, soil type, and management practices can significantly affect actual sequestration rates. This example provides a simplified estimation. For more precise calculations, detailed measurements and species-specific data are essential. Tools like the i-Tree software suite can help estimate urban forest carbon sequestration in more detail.

I appreciate that debates about different farming approaches can frequently become polarised, and I would champion organic every step of the way. But ensuring we have a properly considered land use policy, twinned with a robust trade policy and a fair and transparent supply chain, would mean farmers are able to produce the necessary food while protecting our environment and addressing climate change. Largely unable to influence pricing, many farmers have rationalised their production to remain economically viable by cutting costs or increasing yields, frequently both. Even with farm support, all we've seen is lower consumer prices, higher land prices and higher rents, rather than improved farm profitability. In parallel to this development, government has sought to strengthen environmental legislation, which is laudable, but fails to address the underlying tension between the continued need to "run harder and faster" within a free market, while also taking care of the environment. Continuing to ignore this huge disparity in our food and farming systems is reckless. Resolving this complex issue requires an equally colossal shake-up. Liking this @NPR special reporting on food and climate change. Not a panacea for ag in climate change but regenerative farming practices (diversifying, cover cropping, no-till, dry farming….) can increase soil health and reduce erosion, water runoff and water pollution. Even if long term carbon sequestration levels are as yet unproven, preservation of farmable land or regenerative farming equals resilience and that is a lot of steps in the right direction.

We are proud to present to you our latest AGROMIX mini-documentary. 🎥 Rockrose | From Weed to Crop 🌿 We travelled down to southeast Portugal to catch up with Joao Palma and Jo Smith, who are finding value in an underutilised native shrub — the Cistus rockrose. 🚜 For many locals in this rural corner of Portugal, the rockrose is little more than a weed that needs cut back. But for João and Jo at the Moinhos de Vento Agroecology Research Centre (MVArc) farm, this shrub holds great potential. 🌳 They don't see it as a weed, but rather a crop.
