Speaking to a partner this morning I was reminded that the push and pull in legal recruiting can be a complex dynamic. Some attorneys are 'pushed' into the lateral market by disappointments while there is a subset who is 'pulled' into a process for only an exceptional opportunity. Regardless of the trigger, there can be a continuous ebb and flow. This partner started by telling me he was happy but keep him in mind if I had something extra special. 15 minutes in - we walked thru some major deal-breaker issues. By the end, we explored two firms and their business initiatives in his space (both exceptional) and how this may translate for him. Yes, he scheduled a follow up to continue the process. Consider these 4 Points: 🔹 The Silent Majority: Even when it keeps them up at night, many attorneys won’t immediately discuss challenges. “I am happy” shouldn’t stop you from asking the hard questions. 🔹 Mapping: Identify your firm's solutions for a target candidates' hurdles, provide a roadmap for ambassadors to position them for success. 🔹 Helicopter View: Understanding the bigger picture is key. Start with the firm's business initiatives and vision (Often the strongest selling point!) follow with the specific opportunity/value prop. 🔹 Less can be More: Your audience is discerning, and you should be too.
