Trump return may shake up energy markets, again While Trump is a friend of the fossil industry, global gas markets may be again shaken up if Donald Trump wins the November US presidential election. The granting of approvals for new #LNG projects will resume, regardless of who wins, but some worry that a second Trump administration could reignite tariff wars, especially with China. Domestic Energy Policy: Fossil Fuel Expansion: Trump has pledged to increase oil and gas production by reducing regulations and opening more federal lands for drilling. This approach aims to lower energy costs and achieve "energy dominance." Regulatory Rollbacks: Plans include rescinding environmental regulations, such as those limiting emissions from power plants and vehicles, to promote fossil fuel industries. Renewable Energy Impact: The administration may reduce support for renewable energy projects by rolling back subsidies and halting initiatives like offshore wind development. Global Energy Implications: Climate Agreements: Trump's intention to withdraw from international climate accords, such as the Paris Agreement, could affect global climate initiatives. Energy Markets: Increased U.S. fossil fuel production may influence global oil and gas prices, potentially affecting energy-exporting nations. Prior to 2022, Russia accounted for over 40% of the EU’s natural gas supply. Last year the country's share fell to approximately 15%. To achieve this the EU significantly reduced its demand and replaced Russia with other suppliers. But, at what cost? And which sectors have reduced their demand the most. And how? I put these and other questions to Ben McWilliams, an economist in the field of Energy and Climate Policy.
