Mark Nelson, Managing Director of Radiant Energy Group, appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box this morning to discuss the latest developments in big tech investments in nuclear energy. His appearance coincided with Amazon's announcement of a $500+ million investment to develop nuclear reactors in partnership with X-energy. Last week, USAID ESP gas sector head Justin Goonesinghe moderated a panel discussion at the Gas(es) markets in Ukraine – Reform and Outlook Perspective conference. The event was organized by the Energy Community Secretariat (EnCS) as part of the EU4Energy project. This conference serves as an important platform for discussing the current changes in Ukraine's gas sector and their implications for regional energy security. The panel led by Mr. Goonesinghe explored diversifying supply sources to meet the needs of a decentralized and decarbonized energy sector. They also discussed reforms related to the gas public service obligation (PSO) phase-out, the gas release program, and the transposition of security of supply-related regulations. Ukraine is preparing for the upcoming heating season and faces challenges including the anticipated zero-transit of gas and winter preparations amid ongoing Russian attacks. NEW: Natural gas will continue to be critically important to America’s economic and energy security for decades to come – and long after 2050. That’s one of the big takeaways from two new National Petroleum Council (NPC) studies issued this morning, both at the request of U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. NPC’s analysis of the natural gas supply chain calls for better measurement and continued reductions of methane emissions (U.S. methane emissions are down 37% since 2015), as well as streamlining of natural gas rules. API President and CEO Mike Sommers said NPC’s assessment lays the groundwork for harmonized federal methane regulations and for a clear and consistent permitting process for energy infrastructure. “To fully leverage America’s energy advantage and advance climate progress,” Mike said today, “continued collaboration between energy producers and policymakers will be essential.” The second NPC study said incentives are needed to boost demand for hydrogen fuel and support hydrogen infrastructure - essential to enable a lower carbon future. NPC said the 45V hydrogen tax credit, as proposed, is too risky and needs adjusting so that a broad array of businesses can feed into this lower carbon energy option. Sam Reynolds, Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA)’s LNG/Gas Research Lead, Asia, shared his insights about the impacts of the rapid rise of the United States (U.S.) liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in a bicameral meeting between the U.S. Senate Climate Change Task Force and the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition hosted by Senator Edward J. Markey.   “The majority of new U.S. #LNG production will go to large international trading companies, which are betting on their ability to resell it wherever they can get the highest price. Not only is this assumption making U.S. gas markets more volatile and costing domestic consumers, but it’s also a risky proposition as LNG demand in Northeast Asia and Europe falls. Instead, these traders will increasingly rely on growth in emerging Asian economies, where LNG faces intense price competition from cleaner, cheaper, and more secure #renewable resources,” says Reynolds. As large swathes of America sizzle through record temperatures this week, the Energy Institute published its annual statistical review of world energy: it makes for grim reading for people hoping to see rapid progress on the energy transition... Amanda Chu has the story Countries burnt record amounts of oil and coal last year, sending global fossil fuel consumption and emissions to all-time highs, the Energy Institute reported. Oil demand grew 2.6 per cent, surpassing 100mn barrels per day for the first time. Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix declined slightly by half a percentage point, but still made up more than 81 per cent of consumption.  While EI’s estimates are largely in line with the International Energy Agency’s, its authors offer a more sombre view of the pace of the energy transition compared with the Paris-based watchdog. “Today’s new data provides little encouragement in terms of global climate change mitigation,” said Nick Wayth, chief executive of EI. “Arguably, the transition has not even started.”  Financial Times Energy Institute
