Functional soft drinks brands, it’s your time to shine. 👉 It was announced last week that Tesco has rolled out functional bays for Vitamin, Kombucha and CBD drinks across 180+ stores. This move from Tesco shows us once again that they’re now in a position to keep up with changing consumer demand, something that’s not been possible until now following the endless disruption we’ve experienced over the last 4 years. Their choice of brands to showcase in these bays speaks to this, with Remedy Drinks's Kombucha, VITHIT and CBD brand Goodrays CBD all in the spotlight. These brands are all achieving YoY growth: 🥤 Remedy: +13.6% YoY 🥤 Vit Hit: +28% YoY 🥤 Goodrays: +117% YoY *Source: Polaris powered by Circana - last 12 weeks (W/E 23rd March) in Total Market We’ll be following closely to see how sales perform not only of the brands included, but also the wider category to see which wider soft drinks brands win & lose as shoppers are given the opportunity to make new choices. Shoutout to Emmet Condon, Gary Lavin and Eoin Keenan on the fantastic results and the opportunities you’ve created! Challenger brands, take note: 👉 It’s not just about you, you need to know what’s going on in your category. When your category succeeds, the opportunities for your brand grow. Your competitors know this… Do you? 👉 The soft drinks category is changing at pace… Can you see this, do you know the implications and is this opening up opportunities or threats to your brand? For both, North Star can help. Drop me a DM to find out how, or get in touch from the link in the comments.
Would love to see Hip Pop in this set. The go to #kombucha in my house
Interesting to see this launch after numerous articles in the past month about CBD drinks in particular, having no discernable benefit to consumers. Functional drinks are definitely here to stay but this fixture will change considerably over the next 18-24 months. None the less, Im excited to see Tesco investing behind this, giving more challenger brands in this space, an opportunity to shine 👏 The bigger question is...when are mainstream retailers going to hero non ultra-processed ranges? 🤔
Thanks for sharing Kieran South - this is a significant step in the right direction and a sign of things to come. Functional drinks is driving the growth in soft drinks as consumers are now looking for better for you products, not just products that are the 'least unhealthy'. The future is functional!
I pitched a Kombucha brand in an interview a few years ago (obvs ahead of the curve) - I *still* think it was a good brand - would be happy to share it with someone looking to get into the market.... ;-)!!
Functional bays are a great move forward to differentiate the types of drinks within the category to help consumers buy into more occasional states propositions.
We are getting there, great to see healthier options being picked up by Tesco.
Fantastic. I’ve been alcohol free for 2 years and it’s been awesome to see the evolution of the soft drinks brands over this time - this is a huge win.
Andy Braithwaite FYI and interest 👍🏻

8moThanks for the mention Kieran. its a great initiative from Tesco. The drinks market has been driven by mass market energy and sports for so long, innovation on big shelves has been slow to happen. in the US where most things happen first, they've had strong functional categories for almost 15 years and the growth has been phenomenal. Tesco have shown some minerals here 💪 . The category is about to really take off 🚀
