Here's how: The MBFD introduces the “Handtevy” phone app to assist in lifesaving care specifically to pediatric patients! Pediatric Care Coordinator Adam Wingard explains how the MBFD uses Handtevy in the field to provide the best emergency care for children. This phone application helps emergency responders make quick, efficient and accurate medication dosage calculations based on the patient’s age. The goal is to reduce time spent calculating dosage in emergency situations. Though the app was designed for pediatric patients, EMTs and paramedics can use it for any age. Last week, we talked about how only 17% of emergency departments (EDs) are prepared for pediatric urgent care. And an estimated 28% of preventable deaths could be avoided with high pediatric readiness across all EDs. Today we're providing the key components for high pediatric readiness. 1. Care Coordination - Ensuring there is dedicated pediatric care coordination within EDs, with personnel trained specifically for handling pediatric emergencies. 2. Qualified Personnel - Staffing EDs with personnel who are specifically trained and experienced in pediatric emergency care. 3. Quality Improvement - Implementing continuous quality improvement processes tailored to pediatric care needs. 4. Safety Protocols - Developing and maintaining safety protocols that specifically address the unique requirements of pediatric patients. 5. Policies and Procedures - Establishing clear policies and procedures for managing pediatric emergencies. 6. Specialized Equipment - Equipping EDs with pediatric-specific tools and resources, ensuring they have the necessary equipment to manage pediatric patients effectively. 🚨 Tragic Fire at Jhansi Medical College NICU 🚨 A devastating fire broke out on November 15, 2024, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi, claiming the lives of 10 newborns and injuring 16 others. The NICU was overcrowded, treating 55 infants in a space designed for 18 beds. Initial investigations point to an electrical short circuit or mishandling of oxygen equipment as the likely cause. Despite heroic rescue efforts, including one father saving seven infants but losing his own twin daughters, the tragedy has left families and the nation in mourning. This incident is a wake-up call to prioritize patient safety and ensure tragedies like this never happen again. Our deepest condolences to the families affected. World Patient Safety day is celebrated on 17th Sep, theme for this year is Improving diagnosis for patient safety. In the one of the reputed Medical Practice Study, diagnostic error accounted for 17% of preventable errors in hospitalized patients, and a systematic review of autopsy studies covering four decades found that approximately 9% of patients experienced a major diagnostic error that went undetected while the patient was alive.
