Today we announced the recipients of our first ever Llama Impact Grants and Llama Impact Innovation Awards. These grants support organizations from around the world using our open source AI models to address major local challenges in education, the environment, and technological innovation. We received over 800 applications from organizations in over 90 countries, proposing uses of Llama in education, the environment and open innovation. From that pool of applicants, twenty teams became finalists, and three proposals led the pack. Llama Impact Grant recipients Wadhwani AI, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Digital Green in partnership with One Acre Fund, will be awarded $500,000 each, and runner up Jacaranda Health will receive $300,000 USD to support their use of AI to address pressing social issues. The Llama Impact Innovation Awards support organizations based in Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Asia Pacific, and Latin America that are already using Llama to address local issues related to education, public services, economic development, and more. Recipients will receive up to $35,000 USD, matched with in-kind ad credits. Today marked the end of day two at Web Summit my first time attending this major tech event, where i was a part of Women in Tech® Portugal. With over 70,000 participants from 160+ countries, including 1,000+ investors and more than 3,000 startups, Lisbon has turned into a hub of discussions and ideas on tech development. The panels on AI and sustainable tech were especially impressive. Speakers shared real-world AI applications already transforming industries. I also connected with founders from various countries, discussed tech trends, and exchanged insights. Today’s Marketing Summit focused on key trends in marketing. Top topics included AI-driven content personalisation and the rise of micro- and nano-influencers. Discussions also covered transparency and ethics — essential to modern marketing practices. Key takeaways: 1. Personalisation is essential in successful marketing strategies, but balancing it with data privacy is crucial. 2. AI is integrating across industries, making it critical to understand both its potential and limits. 3. Last week in New York, we announced the winners of our Llama Impact Grants and Llama Innovation Awards. I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the fantastic AI education projects that we have been able to support through this work: 🏆 Wadhwani AI proposed an AI-enabled reading assessment to enhance English fluency and comprehension skills in public schools in Gujarat, India. This module will utilise Llama to generate level-appropriate paragraphs for students, allowing them to focus on and gain mastery of words that they find challenging. By fine-tuning Llama, the generated content will be culturally relevant, safe, and aligned with curriculum standards, addressing the diverse needs of students. 🏆 Tanzania AI Community’s chatbot Twiga provides teachers with a virtual assistant for generating exams, lesson notes, and course materials tailored to the Tanzanian curriculum via WhatsApp. Twiga uses Llama 3 to generate contextualised educational content in order to address the shortage of quality resources and high workload of teachers in Tanzania. Congratulations to all the winners - and to my brilliant colleagues Katie Watson Jordan and Hunter Goldman who have led this project. It was a joy to read the many high quality and inspiring proposals - which left me in no doubt that open source AI is going to continue driving a huge amount of innovation in education. 💡 If you have a great idea for how AI might be used to boost teaching and learning - or, in fact, for social good more broadly - do think about applying to the next round of grants.
