HARD LAUNCH: THE DUKE BUSINESS OF RETAIL SOCIETY We are thrilled to announce that the Duke Business of Fashion Summit is evolving into the Duke Business of Retail Society (DBRS)! Upon reflecting on our inaugural summit, we quickly realized we wanted more – instead of focusing solely on the business of fashion, we are excited to announce that we are rebranding as Duke’s premiere pre-professional student organization elevating career paths at the intersection of creative and business fields. DBRS promotes access to careers and placement in the retail and consumer goods industries more broadly. Expect engaging speaker events, insightful career talks, skill-building workshops, and intimate networking sessions designed to prepare you for success in the creative industries. DBRS 24-25 will allow for a new, dynamic executive team with numerous opportunities for the Duke community to get involved and bring the new DBRS to life! Sometimes we only get one chance to make a first impression… My son came back from a careers fair at his school yesterday. “Mum, I was looking forward to some cool merch today and was really surprised to see what some big organisations are putting out there. It’s really sad. I can’t believe people put their logo on this stuff. We’re talking healthcare, construction, universities, government. Really shocked they think we’d like this.” Me: “Is there anything you’d use?” Son: “Nah, they were giving it away and I didn’t want to be rude and not accept it. The sweets were nice but they were wrapped in plastic. They should have come to you!” Me: “Wouldn’t it be better not to take it and explain you want something better?” Son: “You can’t do that. It’s not cool to say anything. Just don’t rate them. Hypocritical talking about healthcare and giving me sugar sweets and plastic! Though it made me think about X University. I’d wanted to go there but they look cheap. I’m considering Y now. We’ll see.” And that’s all it takes. This pile my son brought home is all made of plastic and foam. The bag has a vinyl print. Most of it is unrecyclable and as you probably know, plastic can only be recycled properly 2-3 times. It has nowhere else to go after that. What’s shocking to see is the lack of thought and understanding for something so simple. If your company name is going on there you want it represented in the best light. I've been on campus at UT Austin 2-3 days/week. Inevitably, I've had conversations with graduating seniors looking for roles that excite them. A lot of them feel paralyzed by this decision. I've shared a reframe with them about "exciting" work that might help you. I call it the 70/30 rule (stolen from a recent conversation with a Product leader) When going through job descriptions and interviews, there are some parts of the role that will really energize you. But that is typically 30% of the job. 70% of what you do might be things that you feel neutral or meh about. The question you want to ask yourself is: Is the 30% of the job exciting that the 70% is worth it? If the answer is yes, you are likely going to enjoy working <despite> the hurdles you face. And if you've navigated making a career choice, I'd like to know: What's a question you'd recommend students graduating think about in choosing their careers?

Famous Fades. Fair Fees. Sitting in my North London barber’s chair at 7 AM, it hit me: many celebrities have sat in this very chair – Steven Bartlett, Anthony Joshua, Daniel Kaluuya, to name a few. Even LeBron James got a haircut here once, though from a different barber. I asked Damon, my barber, what he’s done to build such a recognizable brand. His answer was simple: “We serve the community. No cussing in the shop when there are kids around. If you’re a loyal customer and your father needs a trim, why would I charge him? And every so often, we offer internships to local kids, teaching them an irreplaceable skill and how to become self-employed.” Then it dawned on me – this is why I’ve been coming back for almost a decade. It’s not just the sharp fades or the high-profile clients. It’s the culture. The community-first approach. The fair prices, despite the A-list clientele. In economics, we talk about pricing strategies and consumer surplus. This barber shop has found that sweet spot – a strong value proposition, anchored in authenticity.
