“1) Feeling present and connected to your physical world: thanks to a high-fidelity passthrough (“mixed reality”) experience with very low latency, excellent distortion correction (much better than Quest 3), and sufficiently high resolution that allows you to even see your phone/computer screen through the passthrough cameras (i.e. without taking your headset off). Even though there are major gaps left to be filled in future versions of the Vision Pro hardware (which I’ll get into later), this level of connection with the real world — or “presence” as VR folks like to call it — is something that no other VR headset has ever come even close to delivering and so far was only remotely possible with AR headsets (ex: HoloLens and Magic Leap) which feature physically transparent displays but have their own significant limitations in many other areas. Apple’s implementation of Optic ID as an overlay on top of live passthrough is a beautiful design decision that only enhances this sense of presence. MY TAKE: The Vision Pro high-fidelity passthrough experience parallels Apple’s introduction of the iPhone’s original retina display, which set a new experience bar and gold standard in mobile display fidelity. While much remains to be improved in the Vision Pro passthrough experience, Apple is unquestionably setting a new standard for all future headsets (by any vendor) that VR passthrough must be good enough to closely resemble reality.”

Who is actually using these devices?... The Apple Vision Pro recently landed in the UK, so we've got our hands on it. We've had the Meta Quest 3 since it's launch in October 2023. So far the Quest 3 is placed as more of a gaming/VR experience device whereas the Apple Vision Pro is targeted more towards productivity - hence "Spatial Computing." When using the Quest 3, some of us in the office really enjoyed using it with Immersed and extending our work area in mixed reality, so we're keen to see whether the AVP caters even more for us. In addition to that, if you're like us and have been in this industry for a while, you would've waited in anticipation to really try out the Apple Vision Pro, so we're really keen to see which use cases and applications resonate with us the most.. What's worked best for you? What should we try out? Who's using it on a daily basis?

The world is changing. And we are right in the middle of it. This is the first step toward a general mobile device (GMD) replacing notebooks with smartphones and XR glasses. In my view, this is a logical development that I already saw a few years ago. The smartphone will never reach the performance of laptops and desktop systems, but it will become so fast that it can be used in everyday life for administrative purposes and the pre-production of content/CGI/VFX. XR glasses and spatial computing will replace keyboards and displays will become mainstream. The general mobile device will also enable distributed cloud computing for sure. #ar #xr #generaldevice #xrcomputing #spatialcomputing

More opportunities await to bring TV right on your face. Meta is opening up the operating system for its Quest headset to other hardware makers with Asus, Lenovo and Microsoft’s Xbox the first companies to develop new devices that run the software. Given that its own first-party headsets have struggled to catch on, Meta is hoping that an open ecosystem will encourage more development and apps that will eventually translate into broader adoption. Ruling an empire can often sound empowering and downright powerful. The only issue is if that empire fails to expand or gain traction. Unfortunately, that's the problem Meta has faced with its AR/VR technology. You don't have to look too far in the annals of Silicon Valley history to see how Microsoft and Apple embraced very different strategies to their respective PCs. While Microsoft licensed its MS-DOS operating system to third-party PC makers, first to IBM and to more than 70 other computer companies including Compact Computers, Apple decided to maintain a closed approach. Microsoft's strategy essentially made MS-DOS the dominant OS in the world. And while Apple certainly has succeeded today with its iPhone, iPad, and of course, its Mac OS-based computers, the road to that success took much longer. Now, that it's opening up its operating system to other hardware makers, Meta is hoping for that same success with the aim to be for headsets what Microsoft was for PCs. That begins with Horizon OS, and with an open ecosystem, any hardware company that wants to build a device with Horizon OS will help extend the reach of Meta's Horizon social network. This is important because Meta wants to eventually monetize with ads and commerce, and it can't do that without increasing reach and adoption. Something to keep in mind are the partners involved in this early stage because they're building for different use cases and presumably, audiences. While Microsoft is building for the Xbox and Asus for the gaming community, Lenovo is focused on productivity and learning. Are we coming full circle? It seems strange to bring up Apple, but the company is really the only viable competitor to Meta with its Vision Pro. While Meta is positioning itself for the Android market, Apple's closed ways don't seem to be changing with its AR/VR headset, and that's if the company remains committed to it. Companies such as Meta, its partners and Apple clearly see potential with AR/VR technology. Like the PC, the hardware won't sell itself...it will be the apps that do. That's what Meta is betting on https://tcrn.ch/3xPmzBe #meta #apple #lenovo #asus #microsoft #augmentedreality #virtualreality #partnerships #ecosystem #apps

Today's big news is that Meta has allowed other companies to use its OS for their virtual reality headsets. Lenovo and ASUS are going to make headsets that use Meta's software, including its operating system, store, and social features. This is a really big change for Meta, especially since Google is expected to announce its own XR OS soon. #xrnews #metaquest #horizonos

Wow, big news! Meta is actually making their Quest ecosystem more open. 🚀 Introduces Meta Horizon OS, which powers Meta Quest with open access to third-party hardware makers. 🔧 Quest Store is now Meta Horizon Store and will be more inclusive by integrating App Lab better, making all apps more accessible & discoverable across devices. 🎮 Partners like ASUS, Lenovo and Xbox joining in—expect custom hardware for gaming, productivity, and more! I'm interested to hear more about that ASUS performance headset. I'm a little skeptical, but this does sound like a promising start! What do you think?
