We know that knowledge is power — but this rings true even outside the classroom. This essential knowledge includes the guidance students receive through valuable resources like career counseling. In a recent 2023 Community College Survey of Student Engagement, it’s been found that over 90% of students choose career paths, but feel as though they are lacking essential information about important factors like internship opportunities and local job market info. This article, which includes a new CCSSE report about providing students with more information about their chosen career pathways, showcases why this valuable information is so vital for students entering the workforce: https://ow.ly/ozsl50RENyt #communitycollege #highereducation #research #2yearcollegeexperts

Good news! College is worth it! *** National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE's) 2024 Student Survey sponsored by Indeed (May 2024; 20,482 surveyed) revealed that nearly 90% of the Class of 2024 felt their college experience prepared them for their careers. This positive trend is likely fueled by the growing value placed on experiential learning. 86% of grads participated in internships, co-ops, or other hands-on experiences, with internships being the most popular (hat tip to Wendy Wegner at the Washington State University - Edward R. Murrow College of Communication Murrow College Career Ready program). These experiences provided not only valuable skills but also a strong foundation for career paths, with 64% of students likely to accept full-time positions with their experiential learning employers. More kudos for Wendy and team -- career centers are a force! The study showed that close to 60% of graduating students utilized these resources for resume help, job search assistance, and internship/co-op guidance. As a leader in bridging higher education and career preparation, NACE's survey clearly shows that the college experience, combined with hands-on opportunities and career support, is laying the groundwork for a successful future. 🤔 Is your college degree worth it? A new report by the Burning Glass Institute gave mixed results, with 52% of graduates being underemployed a year after graduation. Other parts of the report clearly show that your college degree has a meaningful impact on your career potential, though. So what's the deal? The real issue is thinking the value of college is in the degree itself. It's not. The true value of college is what you learn. The knowledge, skills, and experience you gain. So how do you make sure college benefits you? ✅ Engage in your classes. Be present. ✅ Join a student organization. Be a leader. ✅ Attend every career fair and networking event you can. ✅ Get an internship. Or several. ✅ Study abroad if you can. ✅ Attend professional conferences. ✅ Network with professors, classmates, and alumni. Remember, college is more than a degree—it’s about LEARNING and GROWTH. I'm grateful for my time at the University of Northern Colorado, where learning has always been the priority. What else would you add to my list? #studentsuccess #careeradvice #lifelonglearning

While there are many reasons behind the lack of diversity in various professions and industries, one driving force is the lack of exposure. Consider the profession you chose. Who influenced you? Who introduced you to the possibility of the job or industry or discipline? For many of us, it was our families, friends, influential educators, etc. But, for those who are part of a demographic that have been excluded from those professions or industries or roles, when and how do they get that introduction? It’s a frustrating thought, isn’t it? All that amazing talent missing from professions and industries because they were never exposed to the possibility. Rather than lament the lack of diversity in a profession or industry, lets change it. Here’s a tip to help: Cultivate interest over time. Just like with your current candidates, engaging with your future candidates is not a once and done. Continue to cultivate interest and excitement over time with multiple age-appropriate touch points. The open house for younger children and their families, the career fair in middle school, the design competition in high-school, the week-long summer camp for high-school Juniors and Seniors, the post-graduation shadow internship program, etc. Cultivating future generations over time keeps them engaged, oriented, and empowered as they approach key decision points in their lives that can lead them straight to successful careers in your workforce. #NoBias #talentaquisition #hiringandpromotion

Prompted by a post from Rob Illidge, I’ve been thinking about what we do, as businesses and professionals, to support schools in preparing the next generation of workers. I’ve asked a number of my connections for help with this and most have brushed me off or plain ignored me but others like James Willetts, Lewis Ellis and Fraser Chapman have gone out of their way to offer their time, help and guidance which has made a real and measurable difference to students futures. When these fantastic young people enter the world of work I hope they return to the companies that have supported them. At NetWeaver - Web Hosting, I’m proud of the support we’ve provided to local schools, both in terms of time to support events and sponsorship, and training in the form of apprenticeships. I can say with absolute certainty that some of our very best people came through this route. We all have opinions on the next generation but unless we’re doing all we can to support them, our opinion has no value at all. If we want the best people in our companies, we need to help them get there. So, what could you do? Could you support an event at your local school? Pay for some equipment? Offer a placement? Take on an apprentice? Offer an online course? If you’re anywhere near Bolton I can probably hook you up with a contact at our amazing UTC. We have a careers fair coming up. If you’re not, send a couple of emails - you might just be amazed at how much you get out of it. #education
