This is a good post from Rebekah Paré about the lessons higher ed can learn from the hospitality industry. I wanted to amplify two things, and they both have to do with MENTALITY. 🌴 Among other factors, the hospitality industry 1) assumes that its customers are unfamiliar with any particular facility or experience. Even if you're a rewards club member, you may have never been to many of their particular properties. They plan your experience, from outreach to space design, accordingly. 2) The hospitality industry also doesn't take its customers for granted. Lots of competition out there. 🔍 In higher ed, I think we too often make the mistake that students and stakeholders are familiar with the nature, location, etc. of our offerings. THEY OFTEN ARE NOT. So we need to get with point 1 above. We also take for granted that certain services will draw students in. NOT TRUE, but more because of a lack of awareness (although certain on-campus services have substitutes). So we also need to get with point 2. When I work on space planning projects with Co|Here Campus and Workplace higher ed clients, we know that spaces -- along with outreach and partnerships -- have to embody this mentality and support the kinds of practices Rebekah is talking about. While there are many reasons behind the lack of diversity in various professions and industries, one driving force is the lack of exposure. Consider the profession you chose. Who influenced you? Who introduced you to the possibility of the job or industry or discipline? For many of us, it was our families, friends, influential educators, etc. But, for those who are part of a demographic that have been excluded from those professions or industries or roles, when and how do they get that introduction? It’s a frustrating thought, isn’t it? All that amazing talent missing from professions and industries because they were never exposed to the possibility. Rather than lament the lack of diversity in a profession or industry, lets change it. Here’s a tip to help: Cultivate interest over time. Just like with your current candidates, engaging with your future candidates is not a once and done. Continue to cultivate interest and excitement over time with multiple age-appropriate touch points. The open house for younger children and their families, the career fair in middle school, the design competition in high-school, the week-long summer camp for high-school Juniors and Seniors, the post-graduation shadow internship program, etc. Cultivating future generations over time keeps them engaged, oriented, and empowered as they approach key decision points in their lives that can lead them straight to successful careers in your workforce. #NoBias #talentaquisition #hiringandpromotion

So, you're about to enter the wild world of adulting and you have no clue what to do with your life. Don't worry, you're not alone! Saige recommends testing the waters with internships or apprenticeships. Think of it as a trial run for your future career – like dating for job options. First things first, hit up the internet for openings on LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor. Then, don't forget to check with your school's career center or guidance counselor for some sweet resources. And who knows, maybe your Uncle Bob's best friend's cousin's dog walker knows someone who can hook you up with an opportunity. Network, baby! Also, go hit up some career fairs and industry events in your area. And if all else fails, just reach out to organizations directly to inquire about opportunities. (calling people? gross) Oh, and don't forget to chat with your parents about your career interests. Attending 4 career fairs this year has given me the opportunity to grow my network outside of seasoned professionals to those just starting their careers. With that, I want to offer advice that I wish would have been given to me when I was in my first few years of college. 1. Investing early will allow you to be more flexible financially in the long run. 2. Dabble in entrepreneurship while your responsibilities are low, and you have the time. 3. Decisions don't need to be made in a moment's notice. Take time to reflect and take calculated risks. 4. Any experience you can get from an early start will help with your career down the line. Paid internships are great, but sometimes volunteer/pro bono work can help get you a better opportunity in the future. 5. Sometimes you have to fail before you can succeed. 6. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Cheers!

Hey LinkedIn Fam! 🌟 Reflecting on my journey since commencing my Master's degree program, I've encountered my fair share of lessons and some were definitely learnt the hard way! Here's a glimpse into a few pitfalls I discovered along the way: 1️⃣ Don't underestimate networking: Picture this – I attended a career fair but didn't bother exchanging contact info with professionals in my field. Big mistake! Networking isn't just about collecting business cards, it's about forging meaningful connections that could lead to exciting opportunities down the road. 2️⃣ Avoid procrastination: We've all been there! Leaving assignments until the last minute, thinking we can pull off miracles. But trust me, scrambling to finish a project the night before it's due is a recipe for disaster. Setting aside dedicated time for tasks prevents unnecessary stress and ensures quality work. 3️⃣ Prioritize self-care: Balancing coursework, part-time jobs, and social activities can be overwhelming. I once neglected self-care, thinking I could power through without breaks. Taking time for yourself, whether it's a walk in the park or a Netflix binge is essential for maintaining sanity amidst the chaos. 4️⃣ Seek Feedback Actively: As a Master's student, I've learned the importance of seeking feedback actively. Whether it's from professors, peers, or industry professionals, constructive feedback provides invaluable insights into areas for improvement and growth! 5️⃣ Prioritize Continuous Learning: Completing a Master's program doesn't mean the end of your learning journey; it's just the beginning! I've realized the importance of staying curious and continuously expanding my knowledge beyond the classroom. Whether it's attending workshops, reading industry publications, or enrolling in online courses, prioritizing lifelong learning keeps you ahead of the curve and enhances your professional growth. 6️⃣ Pursue Internship Opportunities: One of the most impactful lessons I've learned during my Master's journey is the importance of gaining practical experience through internships. Internships provide invaluable hands-on exposure to real-world scenarios, allowing you to apply theoretical knowledge in a professional setting, develop industry-specific skills, and expand your network.
