In the 2024 elections, democracy felt less like a shared experience and more like a multiverse — a realm where different realities collided and coexisted, often with jarring contrast. For some voters, democracy was under siege, with election integrity threatened by “dark money,” false information, and divisive political rhetoric. For democracy to thrive beyond this polarized landscape, it must move from a virtual space of divided realities to a shared foundation rooted in trust and accountability. Achieving this means finding ways to bridge the informational gaps that reinforce these realities. As Americans look to future elections, the goal will be to reunify the multiverse of democracy into a more cohesive, common experience where, despite differences, voters can share in a genuine confidence in the systems that shape their nation’s future. How Fake News Impacts Elections? https://lnkd.in/gsuZKXgE Our latest #thoughtshot video, as we anxiously await the 2024 US election results, is as relevant today as it was in 2019. Canadian Psychologist and associate professor, Gordon Pennycook of Cornell University and the University of Regina provides sobering insights into the influence of fake news on elections - a topic more critical now than ever. “We define fake news as something that has been entirely fabricated, yet presented as if it’s a legitimate news story. It’s not just misleading or inaccurate; it’s completely false,” says Pennycook. 'People engage in this rationalization process when they see something they want to believe ....yet social media is not conducive to critical thinking.” Yes you heard that right, social media is not conducive to critical thinking! 😱 You've likely come across misleading posts on social media and fabricated news stories — are you equipped with the necessary media literacy and critical thinking skills to discern the truth? Or have you fallen for it? #2024elections #socialmedia #harris 💙 #leadership #trump #fakenews

One of the things that blew my mind when I started at the AP was seeing the immense operation that goes into tallying results. I had heard the AP's name attached to calling who won and lost, but I assumed that was based on looking at data provided by some official agency. Instead, I learned the massive scale of coordinating human efforts to get real-time information from across the country. Election Day ... and really, deep into the night and the next morning ... is one of the most incredible times to be at the AP. No one does what we do. Read this story for a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes army working this week: https://lnkd.in/ecbtVkZh The U.S. doesn’t have a nationwide body that collects and releases election results. Elections are administered locally, by thousands of offices, following standards set by the states. In many cases, the states themselves don’t even offer up-to-date tracking of election results. The AP plays a role in collecting and standardizing the results. The AP’s vote count fills a gap by bringing together information that otherwise might not be available online for days or weeks after an election or is scattered across hundreds of local websites. Without national standards or consistent expectations across states, it also ensures the data is in a standard format, uses standard terms and undergoes rigorous quality control.
