How Fake News Impacts Elections? https://lnkd.in/gsuZKXgE Our latest #thoughtshot video, as we anxiously await the 2024 US election results, is as relevant today as it was in 2019. Canadian Psychologist and associate professor, Gordon Pennycook of Cornell University and the University of Regina provides sobering insights into the influence of fake news on elections - a topic more critical now than ever. “We define fake news as something that has been entirely fabricated, yet presented as if it’s a legitimate news story. It’s not just misleading or inaccurate; it’s completely false,” says Pennycook. 'People engage in this rationalization process when they see something they want to believe ....yet social media is not conducive to critical thinking.” Yes you heard that right, social media is not conducive to critical thinking! 😱 You've likely come across misleading posts on social media and fabricated news stories — are you equipped with the necessary media literacy and critical thinking skills to discern the truth? Implications for Democracy The Illusion of Choice While elections may occur, the manipulation of media can create an illusion of choice. Voters may feel they are making informed decisions, but if the information they receive is biased or incomplete, their ability to make truly informed choices is compromised. This undermines the democratic principle of government "of the people, by the people, for the people."Disenfranchisement of the Electorate The influence of media can lead to disenfranchisement, where the electorate feels disconnected from the political process. When candidates are selected based on their media presence or the ability to manipulate narratives rather than their policies or ability to represent the public, trust in democratic institutions erodes.

I wrote about 'deepfakes' and elections for Deccan Herald recently. Now that we're in election season, which set of actors have the most agency when it comes to limiting the impact they might have on elections (over and above many of the structural problems we already have to deal with)? - Social media platforms and technology platforms have a capability gap. There's only so much they can do (even if they want to). - The Election Commission has a capacity gap, and is unlikely to bridge this any time soon. - Political parties and their associates can make the most material difference here. What they have though, is an *intent gap*. Is it likely that they will do the right thing? I'm not holding my breath, but we need to decide how we hold them accountable for their choices. In her latest study, Rebecca Donaway dives deep into the evolution of news coverage during U.S. presidential elections. 📊🗳️ After facing intense criticism after the 2016 election, the news media engaged in a self-reflective process called met journalistic discourse. But did this scrutiny lead to significant changes in how elections are covered? By conducting a comprehensive quantitative content analysis of Facebook news posts from the 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Donaway's research reveals that despite calls for improvement, much of the coverage remained strikingly similar. Explore how traditional, partisan, and online-first networks adapted (or didn’t) between these pivotal elections. https://bit.ly/3Ai0DQ8 Read more to understand the dynamics of modern election reporting and its implications for future media practices! #ElectionCoverage #MediaAnalysis #2020Elections #ResearchStudy

🗳️ Elections should be a time for unity and progress, not chaos and misinformation. Unfortunately, we’ve seen too many instances where manipulated news stories and fake information have influenced voting patterns, sometimes leading to the election of extreme, divisive leaders. In several countries, the spread of false narratives has heightened tensions, sparking unrest and undermining trust in the democratic process. Our votes should be cast based on real achievements, solid plans for the future, and a shared vision of progress. Democracy thrives when informed citizens make choices based on truth, not on fear or deception. Let’s hold each other accountable to seek the facts and think critically about what’s truly best for our communities and our world. #VoteForTruth #DemocracyMatters #StopFakeNews
