PE activity on the rise. After starting the year with PE firms sitting on record amounts of both dry powder, but also record numbers of portfolio companies that were overdue for exit (for which presumably the investor could not get the price they wanted possibly due to the higher interest rate environment), Nathan's post below suggests an interesting trend towards PE type investors shifting towards buying up say cash generative businesses into a group that does not have an imminent exit planned. Whilst I assume that Nathan Placks from Camino is primarily talking about US PE firms, if the US firms are moving in this direction, then presumably UK firms would be as well. In fact I have seen several CFO roles advertised recently that reference UK PE backed businesses looking to adopt a buy and build strategy, rather than buy and exit. In Nathan's post he mentions that: - "There has been a rise in open senior positions. The current market... Over the past 4 weeks, the M&A practice at Camino Search has seen a significant uptick in inbound opportunities. We look at the volume & frequency of inbound mandates as a barometer of market performance, and wow, things seem to be great at the moment. We are busy partnering with PE firms, permanent capital vehicles, rollups, LPs, growth equity firms, and PE portcos across North America and Europe. Some recent trends: - There has been a rise in open senior positions. We have never had this many VP/Head of/Director positions live at once. - PE are talking a lot (loads!!!) about longer-term holds, continuation funds, and evergreen vehicles. - The PE firms that are looking at longer-term strategies are transitioning focus to slightly smaller TAMs. Less about growth, more about free cashflow. - There are some established long-term rollups that have recently had great liquidity events. Many individuals still ask, "but how do I take money out of this vehicle". - There are still many new permanent capital and rollup vehicles being created. There is still lots of opportunity for differentiation out there! - We have never worked on this many full team-builds at once. There are lots of new M&A strategies being implemented by PE across a variety of verticals. he latest readout of our ongoing Global 2,000 research shows that a large-deal approach to M&A holds more risk than other types of M&A programs—second only to an organic approach, in which a company pursues no M&A. According to the data, the chances that a company using the large-deal approach1 will outperform industry peers (as measured by total shareholder returns) is 50-50—akin to a coin flip2 (Exhibit 1). But there are ways companies can change those odds, particularly when they understand which approaches to M&A really work.
