GCSE students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will soon receive their results, but how does the grading system work in England? GCSEs in England now use a numerical system from 9 to 1, replacing the old A* to E grading. This was introduced in 2014, with full implementation by 2020. The highest grade is 9, while 1 is the lowest with U remaining ungraded. Grade boundaries, set annually by examiners, determine the minimum marks needed for each grade. A 4 is considered a standard pass, while a 5 is a strong pass. Many sixth forms require a minimum number of 5s or 6s for further study. The shift to numerical grades was aimed at making GCSEs more challenging and transparent, with a focus on final exams rather than coursework. Additionally, it allows for clearer differentiation among high-achieving students. But did these changes achieve its goals? In a year-group of almost 140 pupils, this level of consistency (in terms of excellence of results) is remarkable and I am starting to get an idea of the extraordinary levels of care and support for both individuals and also small groups of pupils that have made it all possible. Lots of incredible personal stories of resilience in the face of challenge and tragedy too. In short, amazing statistics/'data' on a collective level but amazing stories at a 'human' level too.

Since GCSE exams are looming, it is time to explain my story... I struggled with my GCSE exams. Although my predicted grades were high, my results were average. I left some of my exams thinking I could have done better, and I regretted not being organised with my revision. After completing my bachelor's degree, I founded GCSE Catch Up. A question that I've heard recently is this one: GCSE and iGCSE results day is on Thursday 22nd August 2024, arrangements to collect your results from your educational provider should be available to you. If you are unsure, it is worth contacting your school directly. If you aren't able to collect results in person, it's worth asking if these are uploaded to their portal or posted out too. This will vary by school, but the majority of schools will make results available from 8:30am on the 22nd! #GCSEresults #GCSE #iGCSE

Pupils up and down the country are waiting for their #GCSE results this week. As a teacher, I’ve seen how soul-destroying it is when you open that envelope only to find the grades you worked so hard for didn’t materialise - but it’s important not to be afraid of failing! Having spent my life studying and teaching #history, I’ve seen that progress is more like a tug-of-war than a constant upward march. As a society, there are always forces pulling us backwards as well as forward. It’s the same in our own personal lives. Often, it’s our mistakes which lead us to reevaluate, adapt, and change. Some of history’s greatest thinkers recognised this – the #classic children’s author CS Lewis said that progress “sometimes means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road – in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.” Here at Cardiff & Vale Tutors that’s what we’re all about.
