In my experience, the reason Agile transformations get stuck is that there is resistance to change; people want to do what works for them even if it doesn't work for the team or the org. One example: a very smart developer who was antagonistic against any formalized process, policy, or accountability. His team was floundering, with no process, no standards. He understood "Agile" to mean everyone figuring out everything for themselves, no standards, no policies, no plans, no commitments. In short, he took principles for practices and rules... he was pedantic to excess. Another example: a senior manager who insisted on command-and-control... and then the leaders over him refused to rein him in. I've devised a term for a situation: the Agile Test. In every transformation your organization will be faced with an exposed dysfunction that is hindering improvement... the Agile Test. Will you pass the test by effectively dealing with the dysfunction, or will you fail by taking the easy way out and ignore it? Agile transformations fail because leaders fail the Agile Test. Two weeks ago, I had the honor of delivering a keynote at the Kamer van Koophandel Leadership Day on leading in an agile environment.
