No parent suspects that teen dating violence (TVD) affects their child. Yet up to 19% of teens experience sexual or physical dating violence, about half face stalking or harassment, and as many as 65% report experiencing psychological abuse, according to research from the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Report, 2022. "When someone is in an abusive relationship, they might not understand what’s happening or have the experience to know what to do,” says Kaitlin Corson, LMHC. We sat down with Kaitlin to learn more about the warning signs and risk factors for unhealthy or abusive relationships, and how to start a conversation with your teen about their relationship. The No. 1 Reason for Child death in USA is Gun Violence. As a child psychologist, I am deeply saddened and outraged by the fact that gun violence is the leading cause of death among children and teens in the United States. According to the latest data, there was a 50% increase in the firearm death rate among children and teens from 2019 to 2021. This is a national tragedy and a public health crisis that demands urgent action. Gun violence not only takes the lives of thousands of innocent children and teens every year, but also traumatizes millions more who witness it, know someone who was shot, or live in fear of the next shooting. Gun violence affects the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our children and undermines their potential to thrive and succeed. As a child psychologist, I know that every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment where they can grow, learn, and play. I also know that we can prevent gun violence and protect our children by implementing evidence-based strategies and policies that reduce access to firearms, promote responsible gun ownership, and address the root causes of violence in our communities. I urge you to join me in raising awareness and advocating for change to end this epidemic of gun violence that is harming our children and our future. Together, we can make a difference and save lives. #EndGunViolence #ProtectOurKids #ChildPsychology #usa🇺🇸 #gun #death #childdeath #viralreels #joyfulchild #parenting #community

What is the most important thing you can give your child if they are stuck going back and forth from a safe home to a psychologically unsafe home? Ok, now this is important to give our children NO MATTER what their living situation, not just for those enduring post separation abuse. Yes, our children experience post separation abuse too. Let's think about what is taken away from victims of domestic abuse and narcissistic abuse... Your sense of self and autonomy. So, what will likely be taken from your children in a coercively controlling relationship with a parent? You guessed it...their sense of self and their autonomy. So, if we, as protective parents can give our children unconditional love for who they are rather than "who we want them to be or who they are supposed to be" and allow them space to make choices...AND give them a safe place to fall when they mess up, we are giving them what they most need. What will they get at the other home? "Love" with strings attached. #childrensmentalhealth #postseparationabuse

Do you allow your child to host or attend sleepovers? Sleepovers have become a hot topic of debate among parents as child sexual abuse has received more awareness and attention. One thing we know for certain is that more than 90% of abuse cases are perpetrated by someone known and trusted by the family. On #NationalSleepoverDay, we're sharing tips for a safe sleepover if you DO choose to allow them. Here are a few: Make sure you know and and trust the adults, and that they will be home to supervise. Will older children be present? Their friends? A relative? Always know who will be there, as 40% of children who are sexually abused are abused by older children. Always talk about body boundaries and make sure kids know that no one is allowed to touch them. Check in on your child and allow them to call you. Designate a code word, if you child calls and feels unsafe but is afraid to say so on the phone, they can just say the phrase so you know to pick them up immediately. Never force a child to stay anywhere they are uncomfortable. Listen to your child, and trust their feelings. Go deeper on our blog: https://lnkd.in/eBvzim_2
