A scoping study carried out on food safety by the African Union (2019a) outlined numerous food safety challenges facing Africa, due in part to lack of food safety education and training; inadequate consumer awareness on food safety; and minimal harmonization of food safety standards and border controls within Africa limiting the free movement of food and its traceability This reality reinforces the pressing need for comprehensive policies that address education, infrastructure development, and policy execution. Recommended article by Ravi Pillay. As I read this I reflected on who is supposed to be doing We cannot afford to perpetuate the cycle of outrage, investigation, and inaction; this only leads to more loss and deteriorating trust within communities. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s visit to Naledi is a step in the right direction, but it should be part of a comprehensive and sustained strategy to ensure compliance and build trust. something? Are they doing it? If not what MUST we all collectively DO? The time to point fingers may just land us in even bigger challenges or widespread cases. The recent visits to the affected areas by anyone did not really give great confidence that ANYTHING will change. As Mr. Pillay wisely puts it, “ We cannot afford to perpetuate the cycle of outrage, investigation, and inaction; this only leads to more loss and deteriorating trust within communities” Something has got to be done, WHO is to do it is my question, and what is that which needs to be done? I have a few thoughts, lets see what could be in the space Im afforded to play a role in. Deep in thought before I do yet another interview on a TV station. The time for that in my view is also reaching its sell by, if not its best before. Tangible, intentional and Impactful initiatives needed, beyond awareness and dialogues.

The tragic deaths of six children in Naledi,’Soweto, have once again underscored the critical need for urgent action on food safety in South Africa. My latest Op-Ed, published in Daily Maverick this week, addresses the severe gaps in our food safety practices and calls for a multi-stakeholder approach to ensure such incidents never happen again. I believe that every child deserves safe and nutritious food, and it’s up to all of us—businesses, policymakers, academics, and civil society—to make this a reality. Let’s come together to drive systemic change, promote accountability, and ensure the safety of our communities. #FoodSafety #Leadership #DailyMaverick #SouthAfrica #PublicHealth Lucia Anelich PhD The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) Nathan Mariemuthu Daily Maverick GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science) The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa Zinhle Tyikwe Matlou B. Exposing the Hidden Dangers in Nigeria's Informal Food Markets My team and I have been investigating food safety in Nigeria's informal markets, and what we've uncovered is alarming. Access to clean water, a basic necessity for food safety and hygiene, is severely lacking. This puts food vendors and consumers at risk of waterborne illnesses and other health hazards. But that's not all - our research has revealed even more shocking truths about the state of food safety in these markets. Stay tuned for our full documentary video, where we'll reveal the full extent of our findings and the impact it has on public health. In the meantime, we're taking action. Food Doctors Nigeria Limited is launching a project to install mobile water treatment kiosks in informal markets across Nigeria, starting with one market at a time. This game-changing initiative will provide food vendors with access to clean water, promoting a culture of food safety and protecting public health. Watch out for our full documentary video, coming soon! In it, we'll take you deep into the heart of Nigeria's informal markets and expose the hidden dangers that threaten our health. You won't want to miss it! #FoodSafety #InformalMarkets #Nigeria #WaterAccess #MobileWaterTreatment #FoodDoctorsNg #Documentary #ComingSoon #WatchOut #FoodSafetyMatters #PublicHealth" #fooddoctorsng WaterAid FoodSafety4Africa
