Four Reasons My Coworker Kamina is the Absolute WORST........... (And How I’m Looking for Someone a Little More…Productive) As I search for a Senior Data Scientist in St. Louis to work alongside the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (#NGA), I’m reminded daily of the ways my "current teammate," Kamina, just doesn't cut it: 🐾 She Oversteps Boundaries. Kamina has no understanding of personal space—laptop keyboards, coffee cups, lunches that clearly have my name on it, there's no chill with her. What I’m really looking for in a Senior Data Scientist is someone who can respect workspace while also knowing exactly when to dive in and share insights that add real value (and keep the laptop fur-free). 🧶 She’s Always Distracted by "Shiny Objects." Whether it’s a glimmer of sunlight or a piece of lint, ball of yarn, Kamina’s easily pulled away from the task at hand. By contrast, I'm searching for someone focused on key data trends—someone who doesn’t flinch at large complex geospatial datasets and is ready to work with the NGA to drive strategic impact. 😼 Communication Skills…Are Lacking. Kamina meows on her schedule, not mine. For our Senior Data Scientist role, I need someone who’s not only adept at analyzing data but can communicate findings effectively with cross-functional teams, turning insights into action. 💤 She Sleeps on the job. A Lot. While Kamina may listen to Andrew Huberman and talk about how important “cat naps” are to recovery, we’re looking for a driven individual ready to engage with dynamic projects, transforming data into solutions with real-world implications for our St. Louis team and beyond. In very exciting news, I'm hiring the City & County of SF's 4th Chief Data Officer. This role leads the DataSF team (6 engineers, data scientists, & program folks), the SF open data program, & citywide data sharing & practice. https://lnkd.in/ggmj67Ve The CDO reports directly to me, & DataSF is part of our 48-person Digital & Data Services team in the City Administrator's office. We're a friendly & diverse team with people from many professional backgrounds. CAO is a general, but very forward-thinking office led by the excellent Carmen Chu (don't approach her about this please! just telling you I love working for her). It's a great place to form partnerships, & DataSF works with many permitting, safety, & critical services departments as well as the Dept of Technology, Controller's Office, & Mayor's Office of Innovation. Couple things you should know: - this is a hybrid job that requires one day per week in-office in downtown SF. Sorry we can’t do remote, but it’s for a pretty cool reason - SF deputizes all City employees as disaster service workers in case of an earthquake/etc. So you need to be near. - from the posting, you need to meet the minimum qualifications (5 years managing programs with data & 3 years managing professional staff) but you don’t need to meet all of the desired qualifications - though of course if you do, tell us! In applying for govt jobs, it’s worth taking a minute to make sure your resume & cover letter respond directly to the parts of the job description you meet. We don’t use AI reviews, but we do have non-technical HR folks. So please, spell out your management exp, for example. If you have broad data experience, some of it technical, policy chops, an informed perspective on AI & emerging tech, ability to present & influence at an exec level & are a great, caring manager & senior peer, we'd love to see your application!

Value Creation in Data … 👌 Analysts, Engineers and Data Scientists alike - you need to be able to demonstrate the commercial value you are creating through your work, at all times. 🎯 If you’re finding you’re simply delivering to a request or brief, with no contextual understanding as to WHY, you must seek to better understand the value of the work you’re doing. This is the consistent theme I’m finding when talking to hiring managers .. ‘bring me people who are able to articulate the part they play in achieving strategic business goals’ … those that cannot do this in the modern data market, may get left behind. They hire remotely as well as in DC. Data Scientists don't need reliable data, right? 🤦♀🤦♀ I spoke to several data scientists in the last few weeks in this exact same scenario. They were looking to leave their company because despite what was promised in the interview, they just weren't set up properly.
