There’s a number of data scientists I know who this hits a bit too close to home to 😅🫠 Hiring data scientists when you’re not set up for them to come in and leverage their experience yet is a waste of everyone’s time, money and effort… Without the proper foundation and reliable data, they end up looking to leave the role they’ve joined (and all the promises that were made during their interviews) because they essentially are forced to become data engineers or data analysts. Stop worrying about job titles! Especially don’t worry about titles that business owners have given themselves. It’s their business. They can call themselves whatever they want. “Principal Scientist”? You’re the only scientist. Moreover, there isn’t a universal title/seniority scale. One company’s Sr. Data Scientist could be another company’s Staff Data Scientist. Last job hunting season, I turned down a Staff Data Scientist role for a Sr. Data Scientist role (my current role). Even though the title for my current job is “worse”, the base pay is a lot better. I never think to myself, “oh man, I made a mistake by turning down a Staff role”.
