There are so many interesting discussions happening at London Tech Week. One founder, CEO, and investor discussion that has kept me thinking is "The Nuts and Bolts of Building Your Own Business" with panelists Gerard Grech, Tom Bohills, Chris Woodward-Jones and Galia Beer-Gabel. Here are some of the insights gained: 💡 The importance of engaging a coach early to help the founder “let go” of aspects of the business in preparation for scaling. 💡 The chances of success and survival are greater if you have a co-founder, and the benefits that come with having a co-pilot to digest and strategize your journey. 💡 Ensure that you are intentional and take the time to define your values as a founder. 💡 Recognise what you are and aren’t good at early on; find processes and people to fill the gaps. You can’t be everyone and everything all of the time. 💡Consider trademarking your business. 💡 It’s okay to be vulnerable - in fact, it’s really helpful, especially when leveraging the expertise of your board and advisors; it makes your product better. 💡 Recognise that you are one of many investments for your investors - use their time wisely. 💡 The growing pains of trusting the people you hire to do the building for you. 💡 Advocacy being a key marker of product-market fit. 💡 Choosing investors for your business that are compatible with you, beyond the funding that they offer. 💡 Key considerations in PMF - deciding to either swim in ‘red waters’ (i.e., bloody waters) where products are already available and your mission is to make your offering better, or go into entirely new markets. So much food for thought. Thank you, panelists. Founders and CEOs, do these points resonate with you? Any other insights to add from your experience? #people #culture #startup #scaleup #coaching #LTW2024

Last week was my first week in full founder mode. And it ended with motivational rocket fuel 🚀 I was so privileged to be invited to the Nexus Leeds 5 year anniversary dinner. Nexus is an amazing innovation hub in Leeds. Dr Martin Stow described it as the place for the investment of: → Time → Talent → Resources Nexus was described as being at the heart of a region on the RISE. And at the heart of Nexus was a room full of the most incredible purpose-driven founders and leaders ✨ There were so many highlights including: 1. A guest appearance by Naga Muchetty. 2. Paul Hallett's key note speech. 3. The fireside chat with an incredible panel. Storytelling is such a powerful way to capture attention and Paul's key note speech had not one, but 5 stories. All told through 5 conversations that changed the trajectory of his company, Vet AI. The key takeaways for me were: 1. Great SUPPORT from your spouse helps you build solid foundations. 2. Take OPPORTUNITIES by embracing sliding doors moments. 3. If you have an idea, go GET IT! And most importantly with: ✅ Intentionality ✅ Courage ✅ Focus You can get to where you need to. The fireside chat was amazing too. My key takeaways were: 1. Kamran Rashid's ideology that: → It takes a village to raise a child. → And it takes an ECOSYSTEM to raise an entrepreneur. 2. Eve Roodhouse's focus on: → The power of RELATIONSHIPS. → And the commitment to a VISION to bring about real change. 3. Sophie Copley's commitment to keep connecting to WHY we're doing what we're doing. Thank you Paul for the kind invite. I was incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to learn, be inspired and gain clarity on my own vision. I’m at the start of my founder journey but seeing what's possible on that night, I can't wait to get started!

How to successfully pitch in front of investors? 🤔 The questions seem endless: What to show? How long should it be? How to prepare? I remember those early days, spending countless hours refining our pitch and following every best practice the internet could offer. Now, as we gear up for our own pitch event at Start2, I sat down with the winners from our last event and asked them for practical, hands-on tips. Here's what they shared: 🔵 "Instill curiosity" - Dr. Tim Breker from Vytal Investors are human too. To get the conversation going, create curiosity. Use cliffhangers so they feel compelled to reach out and learn more. 🔵 "Think about what really resonates" - Rick Hodgson from EMROD Too many slides are overflowing with information. Take a step back and focus on what truly resonates. Cut out all unnecessary details. 🔵 "Your pitch is just the start" - Fritz Lange from 3D Spark The pitch is only the beginning. It’s about sparking interest and delivering the core value of your solution for the next conversation. 🔵 "Keep it simple" - Fritz Lange Tell your story so that even your mom can understand it. Then, simplify it further—so your grandma can understand it too! One thing’s for sure: It’s better to keep things simple than try to sound smart. --- PS: Our next Cashwalk pitch event is on November 7th. For almost 10 years, this event has been helping startups connect with investors. Apply now and find your next investor (details in the comments). 👇🏼 #startup #investor #pitch

🆘 The Startup Journey Vol. 2: Don't forget to smile I talk about the negatives and challenges of building Peak 72 a lot. And the reason I do that is because, like how I want to run the business, I want to be open. Be transparent. Be honest. Because people appreciate honesty. But at the same time, it's not all negatives and challenges. There are huge positives, and parts of the day that are amazing. Which counter those that are a bit shit. I get to talk to amazing people every day. From the most junior to seasoned CEOs. And I get to talk at length to brilliant leaders about their experiences. I've never learnt more than I'm learning now, every day. And it's great. And that's without even mentioning that email or phone call that comes in to say, 'Can you help us?'. They're the best. So it's not all bad, sometimes it's pretty f*cking good. Just need to remember: don't forget to smile.

This morning Stacy Lyden-Sauppe and Sophia Merola pulled off another stellar London’s Brightest Businesses panel discussion, a Workspace Group events series bringing business leaders who have taken space with us together to share their experiences with our customers, led by an expert host. We’ve previously hosted panels on sustainability, mental health, scaling up and more - today we had a fascinating group of founders and PE experts discuss funding and investment with Emilie Bellet moderating. A few nuggets from the panel: Connect with investors ‘Pitching well is about thinking who your audience is and ultimately finding connections between people. Even if the distance between them is wide, there are ways to bridge that gap…but also, ask if you need outside funding. Sit with yourself and consider whether you need Venture Capital or if one angel investor will get your business where you want to be in five years.’ Varaidzo Tendai Moyo, CEO and co-founder of Ruka Hair Think before you leap ‘Be frugal - haggle and get a deal. Treat the money as your own and make it a point to ask yourself if you can be more creative with it. But be wary of new methods of investment - unless it’s been proven to make your business grow quicker, step back and ask if it’s right.’ Vanesa Pazos, partner at NoBa Capital Keep your shares ‘It is so easy to spend money in a business…there’s a fine balance between not having enough cash and selling off too much [equity]. We’ve done our best work when cash is an issue and the hustle mentality has come to life. It [forces you] to get really creative.’ Zak Walters, co-founder of Vinca Wine Ride the wave(s) ‘In consumer brands there’s always a moment of excitement and energy with launch and/or a new branding strategy, and then a dip of months to years that is essentially just hard grind. [Growth] is jagged and bouncy and it is rarely an uphill trajectory. Generally speaking, assume that innovation will happen during the times when you’re struggling to make ends meet in the slog in between [cash flows].’ Jonathan Trimble, co-founder and CEO of And Rising #startups #smallbusiness #networking #myworkspace
