Following on from a post my friend Anna Hegarty posted a few weeks ago about an event she was running at a local Secondary School where she had requested people to provide questions to pose to those who had chosen to not to go to University and instead enter the world of work. I thought I would post the questions I suggested here for those of you who didn't choose the University route to answer, retrospectively, to help those young people considering a similar move: 1. What advice would you give someone considering not going to University? 2. If you could do it again, is there anything you’d do differently? 3. What advice would you go back and give your 17/18 year old self? 4. What skills do you think employers find most valuable for those starting their first job? 5. Are there any common misconceptions about working without a degree that you’d like to clarify? 6. How has entering the workplace straight from school impacted your career in the long term? 7. In what way did starting work earlier give you an advantage? Of course, entering the world of work is one option but Apprenticeships are another route that allow an individual to continue learning but, on the job, so to speak. And, with the Apprenticeship Careers Fair coming up next week at the Kia Oval on Tuesday 5th November, it seemed timely to share. To get the most out of these fairs, I would suggest preparing the following: 1. Do some research beforehand to find out who is exhibiting and identify which employers you wish to meet 2. Set a goal or two for you to aim to achieve with every employer you meet 3. Prepare a list of questions to ask them to help you understand their recruitment process and how best to prepare for each stage and the timelines 3. Prepare a short elevator pitch and practice delivering it 4. Have ready copies of your stand out CV so you can leave with them Good luck!

Prompted by a post from Rob Illidge, I’ve been thinking about what we do, as businesses and professionals, to support schools in preparing the next generation of workers. I’ve asked a number of my connections for help with this and most have brushed me off or plain ignored me but others like James Willetts, Lewis Ellis and Fraser Chapman have gone out of their way to offer their time, help and guidance which has made a real and measurable difference to students futures. When these fantastic young people enter the world of work I hope they return to the companies that have supported them. At NetWeaver - Web Hosting, I’m proud of the support we’ve provided to local schools, both in terms of time to support events and sponsorship, and training in the form of apprenticeships. I can say with absolute certainty that some of our very best people came through this route. We all have opinions on the next generation but unless we’re doing all we can to support them, our opinion has no value at all. If we want the best people in our companies, we need to help them get there. So, what could you do? Could you support an event at your local school? Pay for some equipment? Offer a placement? Take on an apprentice? Offer an online course? If you’re anywhere near Bolton I can probably hook you up with a contact at our amazing UTC. We have a careers fair coming up. If you’re not, send a couple of emails - you might just be amazed at how much you get out of it. #education

🛠️As an employer in Guilford County, can you relate to these workforce challenges? You've tried various recruitment options, such as job boards, career fairs, and online postings, but nothing seems to work. The competition for skilled workers is fierce, and the pool of qualified candidates is shrinking. As technology rapidly evolves, finding and training talent has become even more daunting. 💡 If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these, youth apprenticeship can be the answer. Apprenticeships offer a practical solution by developing skilled talent from within. They help bridge the skills gap, transfer critical knowledge, and create a loyal workforce. Want to understand more about the benefits of degree apprenticeships ? read below. Excellent article by our Maisie Lawler
Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to return to Esher College for their Careers Fair – a full-circle moment for me! As a student there from 2021-2023, I remember feeling uncertain about my future and what direction to take. Fast forward to now, and I'm proud to have represented P&G and shared my passion for degree apprenticeships with current students. The transition from college life to working at a global company like P&G has been an eye-opening journey. My confidence has skyrocketed as I've gained real-world experience, taking on meaningful projects and responsibilities that have shaped both my skills and outlook. It was incredibly rewarding to be able to talk to students about my journey, and how pursuing a degree apprenticeship has been the perfect blend of hands-on learning and academic growth. I hope I was able to inspire them, just as others once inspired me! If you’re interested in P&G’s degree apprenticeship scheme, please find our application link below.😄 https://lnkd.in/e3hNMzZn #CareersFair #DegreeApprenticeships #GrowthMindset #P&G #CareerJourney #PersonalGrowth Joe Clines Cat Jayne Elmes

Apprenticeship Application Tip #2 Tailor your application to each apprenticeship opportunity. Rather than using a generic approach, customise your CV, cover letter, and responses to fit the specific role and company you’re applying to. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the apprenticeship and show how you can add value to their team. Why? Because personalised applications make you stand out. They demonstrate that you’ve taken the time to understand what the employer is looking for and that you're genuinely interested in working for them. It’s not about having the perfect background. It’s about showing your potential, passion, and willingness to learn. Avoid putting unnecessary things in your CV that wouldn’t help you in your apprenticeship application. This relates to my previous tip in my last post that, if you have a strong fundamental idea of what role you desire from early, this will allow you enough time to gain experience relevant to that specific role. Once again, save yourself the headache!

As a current apprentice, I can completely understand and relate to the overwhelming and daunting feeling that comes with the applications and assessment centres coming up in the next few months. In my time applying for apprenticeships, I’ve faced multiple different rejections and had a variety of experiences with applications and assessment centres so I would like to tell you the most important things I have learned from this. My first piece of advice and also one of the most important is to do your research about the company and apprenticeship, and make sure that you showcase this in any interview or assessment centre! I know it may sound basic but you would be surprised at how many people go into interviews with little knowledge of the company, their core values, case studies and also the role that they’re applying for! Stand out from the crowd and showcase all of your research, show how passionate you are about the company and what they do! This research gives you a chance to understand the company’s culture and values - allowing you to assess whether this is the right place for you. Overall, you need to utilise your knowledge and research, link it to your own experiences and build a strong case as to why you would be a good fit at the company. And in any interviews, where relevant, make sure to link your answers to your knowledge, experience and why you would be a great fit for the role. Secondly, be yourself - be confident and show your personality! Although these situations are daunting, be confident in yourself and your abilities, show the recruiters the best version of you and everything that you have to offer to the company! Also, make sure to be true to yourself! As much as this is a good opportunity for the company to consider whether you are a good fit for them, it’s also a great opportunity to consider whether the company is a good fit for you and your ambitions! And although you must stay professional throughout, let your personality shine through, we’re all human at the end of the day and it’s a great chance to show your interpersonal skills! One of my biggest pieces of advice is to not dwell too much on any failures or mistakes, take them as an opportunity to learn and grow. I’ve faced many rejections in the years and although it’s difficult, you need to take it as an opportunity to reflect and learn so that you can perform better next time. A massive thing that I have learned is that if you are in an interview scenario and feel like you’ve messed up a question, please don’t let it put a dampener on the rest of your interview/assessment centre - use this as motivation to make the rest of your interview even better! We’re all humans and make mistakes so it’s a great chance to also show how you recover from any mistakes made. But at the end of the day, remember that everything happens for a reason and when one door closes - it opens up another one for you. I wish you all the best of luck, my LinkedIn DMs are open to anyone.
