Is everyone up on the Reesa Teesa story from TikTok over here on LinkedIn? I know you are, don't act like you're not. From a business perspective, what did you learn? Me: If you are going to invest that much time into content, monetize as soon as you realize you are actually creating content. I think she monetized a bit late and others monetized off of her content more than she did in the beginning. I'm not saying she could have predicted the virality, but at a certain point she could predict the output of work and effort. Also, understanding the social platforms and how they operate is crucial. My strategy would have been to put the first hour of content on TikTok to get people hooked, then I would have moved them to YouTube once I realized the videos were moving numbers. TikTok is great for virality and audience building, but YouTube is a better monetization platform currently. What are your thoughts? What did you learn? Or, do you have no idea what I'm talking about?

Out of YouTube and Instagram, which platform has a better user-base to create an active audience? Have you been dedicatedly watching the same content creator for 2+ years on any platform like #YouTube or #Instagram? For me it's MKBHD, Casey (when he does post), Colin and Samir off the top of my head, and they are all predominantly on YouTube. In the past we have seen some successful creative runs from creators like Casey Neistat, Logan Paul, etc. These people dominated YouTube for a long time with an audience that actually cared when these people posted anything on their channel. Whereas, with Instagram it seems like if you show up on the timeline or explore, good, if not then too bad. It is not a search-first platform or where people look out for specific sort of information or entertainment content. But it seems like, now - yes, we do still have 'creators' getting a lot of traction on their socials but not able to sustain a career out of it and build a personal brand around themselves, compared to a few years ago.

How do brands get started on TikTok? This is coming up more and more with clients at the moment, so my good friend and colleague, Madi Wilmshurst and I recorded one of our chats recently about exactly this. Madi is a social media manager, content creator and influencer in her own right and knows a thing or two about what it takes to crack TikTok. I’ve popped a summary of our (very honest!) chat below but if you’d like to see the full version, drop me a DM or a ‘yes please’ in the comments and I’ll send you the link. 1️⃣ Be brave and embrace it, or don’t do it 2️⃣ Have a strategy, a real reason to be there. Don’t just jump in because everyone else is 3️⃣ Choose a pillar; educate, entertain or escape 4️⃣ Stick to a solid content plan, with how you’ll respond to comments (good and bad) part of that plan 5️⃣ Watch, read, learn and enjoy it! #comms #socialmedia #tiktok #brands

I would take 50k views on my YouTube channel over 5 million views on TikTok for 3 reasons: 1) We've had videos go viral on The Marketing Meetup TikTok and it hasn't been a particularly positive experience. You end up being served to an audience that doesn't really care about what you do. They only care about that one video they watched. 2) YouTube typically is a place where people engage for much longer. 50k views on a video that is 10 minutes in my opinion is way better than a couple of seconds on a TikTok. 3) Could you list 5 creators or channels you follow on YouTube? Then ask the same of TikTok. You might be able to say "Yeah there's this lady who does funny dog videos" but on YouTube, I know the name of the channel and the person. My connection is MUCH deeper. So whilst I love TikTok and see its value, understanding who engages with you and how is more important to establish than any vanity metrics on 'views'. (post inspired by Jack Gaisford who's content IS worth watching 🙌) #marketing #themarketingmeetup #videomarketing

The *possible* (but IMO unlikely) US TikTok ban brings a few a hugely important reminders for anyone who makes content - whether you're a business or creator: 1. Your audience on social media is rented, not owned. It's never a bad time to start building direct communication channels like a newsletter (DM me if you wanna know how I've built my newsletter to over 1k people in a few months!) 2. Your videos could disappear in a second! In a puff of smoke! Save your videos in a hard drive - don't lose them! *and most importantly* 3. Be on multiple platforms. This can be as easy as repurposing videos by using a watermark remover like TikSave and uploading on a different platform. What do you think? Will the ban go ahead? #linkedin #tiktokban #contentcreators #socialmedia #socialmediamarketing #tiktok #videocontent #repurposing #socialstrategy
