Had an amazing breakfast with a friend and mentor— he’s an RVP that still personally produces because he enjoys helping the “right client.” We chatted about titles and how everyone has different perspectives about them. We chatted about ideal clients in both of our spaces. (We’re in different industries.) We chatted about the feeling of validation and the sense of accomplishment you get after closing a deal. It made me realize, that I too, enjoy the same thing. Winners like to know they’re winning. How do you know you’re winning? And even further— How does your team know they’re winning?

The key is knowing what actually matters to your team. Maybe it's a shoutout in a meeting, a quick handwritten note, or a lunch (just make sure it’s not during Ramadan or Lent—ask me how I know). How often should you do it? There’s no strict formula, but I like to celebrate at key moments—after a big project launch, a sprint, or even when things didn’t go as planned (hello, rollbacks!). It’s about acknowledging both the major wins and the tiny steps that got you there. Team wins, individual wins—no one's left out. So here's your cue: Who on your team deserves a shoutout right now? We want to sit on top of the mountain, having done all the hard work, and be acknowledged and recognized for what we've achieved. We want to just stay there. The most important thing to remember about winning is that it's a by-product of the first four levels. You only get to win if you've gone through all four of the other levels first. So if you live for the award show, the followers, and the fame, you're going to be disappointed to discover that winning is rare and only accounts for a tiny fraction of the time you spend in your purpose. You have to love the lower parts. Life is not spent at the pinnacle. Those mountaintop events are only a tenth of 1 percent of the experience. Winners are still learning, experimenting, performing, and struggling. It's all part of the journey, and it's all valuable." Jay Shetty I'm not necessarily interested in the game, followers etc. but I definitely feel the disappointments deeply. Recently, I've uncovered unresolved rejection issues that a year ago I'd have brushed off; 6 months ago I'd have said were grounded only in relationship contexts; and today, I recognise permeates throughout my entire life and is particularly connected to the perception I have of myself. The process I love. Until I don't get results after 2 weeks. Then I jump into a new process because lack of progress means i'm being rejected and I'm being rejected because I'm not good enough and because I'm not good enough I have to find something else... This was supposed to be a short post to inspire thinking 🙈 I'd love to know if it brought anything up for you 🙂

However, this claim seems somewhat underwhelming, especially considering their workforce size and the upcoming expenditure for the awards ceremony. To put this in perspective, with an employee base ranging between 1,000 and 5,000, the 254 nominations represent only about 5.08% to 25.4% of their total staff. Last year’s nominations, calculated to be around 179, indicate a low participation rate. Moreover, it is important to note that these nominations are solely from staff members, with no input from customers or residents. This exclusion is disheartening, particularly considering the crucial role that customers and residents play in the organisation’s operations. Their feedback and recognition would provide a more comprehensive and authentic measure of performance and service quality. When considering the costs associated with organising and hosting an awards ceremony, including logistics, venue, awards, and lost productivity, one must question the efficiency and impact of this exercise. The expenditure seems extravagant and not necessarily reflective of broad recognition across the organisation. Given these figures and the lack of customer/resident involvement, it's crucial to consider whether the awards genuinely enhance morale and recognition or if they simply serve as a costly tradition with limited reach. In light of these numbers, the resources allocated to the Gold Star Awards might be better invested in more impactful employee and customer engagement initiatives, or better yet spent making the homes of their residents safe, warm and dry.
