This week our APM Futures team in Devonport had the privilege of hosting the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Minister Bill Shorten, and Tasmanian Senator Anne Urquhart. This special event included representatives from Speak Out Advocacy, participants of NDIS Employment Supports delivered by the APM Futures team, and APM staff. The highlight of the meeting was the incredible engagement from our participants. They had the unique opportunity to meet directly with Minister Shorten and Senator Urquhart, ask their pressing questions, and share their personal experiences of living with disability and the NDIS. Their voices and stories were at the heart of the discussions, providing invaluable insights into the real-world impact of disability services. The session was filled with open and honest conversations, focusing on the future of the NDIS and how it can better serve the needs of people with disability. It was truly inspiring to see our participants actively contributing to these important discussions. A big thank you to Minister Shorten and Senator Urquhart for their time and dedication to improving disability services. We also extend our gratitude to all our participants for their valuable contributions. #NDIS #DisabilitySupport #EmploymentServices #APMFutures #CommunityEngagement Pictured: Minister Shorten with APM Futures staff Sarah Marshall and Nicole Bates Minister Shorten with participant Jaylum Minister Shorten with participant Kobi Minister Shorten with participant Ebony

Great to see this analysis linking different government processes.
Yesterday, the Australian Federation of Disability Organisations made a submission to the consultation surrounding the exposure draft for the new Aged Care Act. Our submission contains 33 recommendations which reflect changes that must be made before the Act becomes law. The content of the exposure draft is extremely problematic From a human rights perspective. Its content also contradicts several recommendations arising out of the Independent Review of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. I know the Disability Royal Commission and the NDIS Review are both requiring significant resourcing from the sector at the moment. Please though, do not ignore what's happening in the age care space. Older people with disability who are excluded from the NDIS have been falling through the cracks for around a decade now. The Australian government promised nobody would be worse off following the introduction of the NDIS. They also promised older people with disability would have their needs met under the aged care system. 10 years later, this still fails to be the case. The discrimination must end now.

The NDIA's recent pricing changes are jeopardising the sustainability of vital #SupportCoordination #Services, especially for #NDIS participants with complex needs. According to a survey by Disability Intermediaries Australia, many Support Coordinators are closing their services, leaving tens of thousands at risk. This pricing approach undermines the quality and sustainability of #disability services. We urgently call on the NDIA and the #federal #government to reassess these price limits to secure the future of the NDIS. Please join us in urging the Minister for the NDIS and the NDIA to take swift action to adequately price Support Coordination services. Your voice can make a difference. Credability Systems

Dr Darren O’Donovan has published a Conversation article: ‘NDIS reforms are still in limbo. What’s going on, and are people with disability getting enough say?’ In December last year, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) review proposed key reforms to ensure the sustainability of the scheme and improve outcomes for people with disability. Its recommendations included a shift to an overall funding amount for each participant. It also called for state and federal governments to cooperate in improving support across the lifecycle of disability. In March, the federal government introduced a bill to implement a limited number of the review’s recommendations. Dr O’Donovan argues three dynamics in the bill have clouded the original vision of the NDIS review: an uncertain method for calculating budgets for individual participants; the use of legislative instruments that may stifle co-design with disability organisations; and the introduction of bureaucratic powers to prevent rorting that may make people with disability more vulnerable. “This bill commences a long reform process that can only succeed if it’s based on clarity, accountability and transparency,” writes Dr O’Donovan. “The voices and experiences of NDIS participants and their representatives are key to delivering people-centred reform.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3zWnCQA #LaTrobeLawSchool #LaTrobeUniversity #Conversation

🌟 Exciting News for the CALD community🌟 Participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) have come together to co-design a groundbreaking Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) Strategy for the period 2024-2028. In partnership with the National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA) and a panel of 32 organizations, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has crafted this Strategy based on insights from over 800 voices within the CALD community. This extensive collaboration ensures that the Strategy and the NDIS are equipped to address the needs of nearly 60,000 participants from CALD backgrounds, including those from the Deaf Community, both now and in the future. The Strategy outlines 28 proposed actions over four years, aiming to enhance inclusivity and accessibility within the Scheme and deliver a better NDIS experience for CALD communities. Key actions include providing enhanced guidance to planners, refining processes for NDIS meetings with interpreters, and supporting community activities aimed at raising awareness of the NDIS and reducing stigma around disability in CALD communities. To track progress, the Agency has developed an Action Plan, with translations of the Strategy and Action Plan available in 85 languages, including Auslan and Easy Read versions. Annual public reporting will provide updates on the progress of each action and summarize milestones and engagements. #NDIS #CALD #DisabilitySupport

The #NDIA #NDIS should employ people with disabilities that have abilities and use the services of disability owned businesses; because it is the people with disabilities that know what works and what does not for people with disabilities. #disabilitysupport #disabilityadvocate
PWDA is calling for genuine co-design to refine the new legislation and major reforms to the National Disability Insurance (NDIS) announced in parliament today by Minister for the NDIS Bill Shorten. PWDA President Marayke Jonkers has emphasised people with disability have expressed some concern. “No one is more interested in the NDIS being sustainable and viable than people with disability. Our lives depend on it. People with disability and NDIS participants are worried about what these changes will mean for their lives and the supports we rely on to fully participate in the community. We will be analysing the proposed legislation in full and using the upcoming consultation process to represent the views of our members and the disability community. Would you like to provide PWDA with feedback, concerns or any questions you have regarding the NDIS Reform announcement? We would like to hear from you in the comments below, or you can call 1800 422 015 or email pwd@pwd.org.au. Today’s announcement by Minister for the NDIS, Bill Shorten, on the new legislation and major reforms to the National Disability Insurance (NDIS) marks a pivotal moment for the disability community. As WDA calls for genuine co-design, it's crucial we all lean in and listen closely. The concerns raised by PWDA President Marayke Jonkers resonate deeply. The sustainability and viability of the NDIS are not just policy issues; they are about real lives, real needs, and the ability to participate fully in our communities. People with disabilities and NDIS participants are rightfully concerned about how these reforms will impact their lives and the supports crucial for their day-to-day activities. As we move forward, engaging in the consultation process is more important than ever. It’s about ensuring that the voices of those most affected are not just heard but are influential in shaping the outcomes of these reforms. If you have feedback, concerns, or questions about the NDIS reform announcement, I encourage you to reach out to PWDA. Your input is invaluable in making sure the NDIS continues to serve the needs of its community effectively. Let's stand together to ensure these changes reflect our collective aim for a more inclusive, supportive, and accessible future. #NDISReform #DisabilityRights #InclusivePolicy #CommunityVoice
